Trump battles GOP holdouts and Democrats amid SAVE America Act Senate test vote

by Rachel Morgan News Editor March 17, 2026
written by Rachel Morgan News Editor

Congressional Republicans are prioritizing passage of the SAVE America Act, legislation requiring proof of citizenship for voting, in the coming days. The bill has grow a key component of President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda, with the president indicating he may not sign other bills into law until It’s passed – with the possible exception of a DHS funding measure.

A Contentious Path Forward

The path to passage is proving demanding. While Republicans agree on the importance of the SAVE America Act, they currently lack the votes to overcome a Democratic filibuster in the Senate. Breaking a filibuster requires 60 votes, and Republicans hold only 53 seats.

Did You Know? President Donald Trump has stated he will not sign any bills into law until the SAVE America Act passes, with a potential exception for a DHS funding measure.

This impasse has led some Republicans to consider altering Senate rules to eliminate the filibuster – a move described by Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas as “nuking” the filibuster – specifically to secure passage of the SAVE America Act.

Democrats strongly oppose the bill. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of Latest York called it “one of the worst things we’ve seen in America in a very long time,” while Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois suggested the president’s motivation is to reduce voter turnout in the upcoming November election.

Expert Insight: The potential for altering the filibuster rules represents a significant escalation in the debate over voting rights and legislative procedure. Such a move, while potentially enabling the passage of the SAVE America Act, could have lasting consequences for the balance of power in the Senate.

What Could Happen Next

If Republicans remain unable to secure 60 votes, a vote to eliminate the filibuster could be brought to the floor. Such a move would likely pass along party lines, though it could face internal opposition from some Republicans wary of changing long-standing Senate traditions. If the filibuster is eliminated, the SAVE America Act could then pass with a simple majority. Alternatively, negotiations could continue in an attempt to reach a compromise, though the current positions of both parties suggest this is unlikely.

Frequently Asked Questions

The SAVE America Act requires proof of citizenship when applying to register for federal elections.

Why is President Trump prioritizing this bill?

The SAVE America Act is described as the “touchstone” of President Trump’s legislative agenda, and he has warned he won’t sign other bills until it passes.

What is a filibuster and why is it relevant here?

A filibuster is a tactic used in the Senate to delay or block a vote on a bill. It requires 60 votes to overcome, and Republicans currently do not have enough votes to do so.

As the debate over the SAVE America Act intensifies, what role do you believe voter identification laws should play in ensuring election integrity?

Ninth-Inning Rally Lifts Vanderbilt to Win over LSU – LSU

by Chief Editor March 14, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Vanderbilt’s Walk-Off Win Signals Shifting Momentum in SEC Baseball

A dramatic 13-12 victory for Vanderbilt over LSU on Friday night underscored the unpredictable nature of college baseball and highlighted the growing competitiveness within the Southeastern Conference. The Commodores, fueled by Logan Johnstone’s ninth-inning home run, demonstrated resilience and a potent offensive attack, signaling a potential turning point in their season.

The Rise of the Walk-Off: A Trend in College Baseball?

Walk-off wins, like Johnstone’s, are becoming increasingly common in college baseball. This trend isn’t necessarily due to a decline in pitching, but rather a surge in offensive power and a greater emphasis on aggressive base running. Teams are more willing to take risks in late-game situations, leading to higher-scoring affairs and more opportunities for dramatic finishes.

LSU’s comeback from a six-run deficit further exemplifies this trend. The Tigers showcased their own offensive capabilities, battling back to take a lead before ultimately falling short. This willingness to fight until the final out is a hallmark of competitive SEC baseball.

Offensive Explosions and the Power of the Long Ball

The game featured a combined 25 runs and four home runs, including Jake Brown’s 11th of the season for LSU. This highlights a broader trend in college baseball: a focus on power hitting. Modern training techniques and an emphasis on swing mechanics are producing players capable of consistently hitting the ball out of the park.

Braden Holcomb’s home run for Vanderbilt and Seth Dardar’s three-run double for LSU were pivotal moments, demonstrating the game-changing impact of a single swing. Teams that can consistently generate power are poised for success in the SEC.

The Importance of Bullpen Management

Both Vanderbilt and LSU relied heavily on their bullpens in Friday’s contest. Nate Schlote earned the win for Vanderbilt with a scoreless ninth, while Gavin Guidry took the loss for LSU after allowing three runs in 1.2 innings. Effective bullpen management is crucial in a league where games are often decided in the late innings.

Coaches are increasingly prioritizing bullpen depth and versatility, seeking pitchers who can handle high-pressure situations and consistently deliver strikes. The ability to shut down opposing offenses in the final three innings can be the difference between a win and a loss.

SEC Baseball: A League on the Rise

The SEC continues to be a dominant force in college baseball, consistently sending multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament. The competitiveness of the league is attracting top recruits and fostering a culture of excellence. Games like the Vanderbilt-LSU matchup showcase the high level of talent and the intensity of competition within the conference.

The series resumes Saturday, promising another exciting matchup between two of the SEC’s top teams. The game will be televised on the SEC Network, providing a national platform for the league’s rising stars.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What was the final score of the Vanderbilt vs. LSU game? The final score was Vanderbilt 13, LSU 12.

  • What is LSU’s record after the loss? LSU’s record is now 13-6 overall and 0-1 in SEC play.
  • Where will the next game be played? The next game will be played at Charles Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tenn.

Real estate boss Don Ha offloads his heritage home for over $10m, All things property, under OneRoof

by Chief Editor March 13, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Auckland’s High-End Property Market: Trends and Transformations

The recent sale of REMAX NZ chairman Don Ha’s St Heliers villa for over $10 million signals ongoing activity in Auckland’s luxury property sector. The transaction, completed with Heliers Holding Limited, highlights a trend of high-value sales despite initial plans for redevelopment shifting gears.

From Demolition to Deal: A Changing Landscape

Ha initially purchased the historic property in 2019 for $6.8 million with intentions to demolish and rebuild. Plans for a substantial mansion, including features like a rooftop pool and five-car garage, were commissioned with Sumich Chaplin. However, these plans were ultimately abandoned. The property was then marketed with an emphasis on its potential for subdivision, reflecting a broader trend in Auckland real estate.

The villa’s eventual sale price of $10,217,391, after just two months on the market, demonstrates continued demand for prime Auckland real estate. The sale was handled by Ha’s brother, Zarn Ha and colleague Aaron Jokhan, both of REMAX.

The Role of REMAX and Key Players

Interestingly, the buyer, Heliers Holding Limited, is directed by Mala Maharaj, the current CEO of REMAX New Zealand. Both Ha and Maharaj declined to comment on the specifics of the deal. Maharaj’s career trajectory, beginning with Don Ha Real Estate in 2004 and culminating in her current role, underscores the interconnectedness within the Auckland real estate landscape.

Subdivision Potential and Market Valuation

The property, situated on over 3000sqm of land, was marketed for its “multiple subdivision opportunities.” Initial valuations in 2023 suggested a market value of $12.5 million, down from a peak of $15 million. Despite this, the final sale price exceeded the rateable value of $8.35m, indicating a strong buyer’s market for properties with development potential.

Heritage Concerns and Development Pressures

Ha’s initial plans to demolish the colonial-era villa drew criticism from the Civic Trust, which highlighted concerns about the preservation of Auckland’s heritage buildings. This reflects a wider debate about balancing development with the protection of historical architecture in a rapidly growing city.

Despite the loosening of foreign buyer restrictions for properties over $5m, the property did not attract overseas interest.

Looking Ahead: Trends in Auckland’s Luxury Market

The sale of Don Ha’s property provides insights into several key trends shaping Auckland’s high-end real estate market:

  • Development Potential: Properties with subdivision opportunities continue to be highly sought after.
  • Shifting Priorities: Initial plans for grand redevelopment can be reassessed based on market conditions and personal preferences.
  • Internal Transactions: Deals within established real estate networks, like the one involving Don Ha and Mala Maharaj, are becoming more common.
  • Heritage vs. Development: The tension between preserving historical buildings and maximizing land use remains a significant factor.

Pro Tip:

When considering a property purchase, especially in a dynamic market like Auckland, it’s crucial to conduct thorough due diligence, including exploring potential development opportunities and understanding local zoning regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What was the final sale price of Don Ha’s property?
A: $10,217,391.

Q: Who purchased the property?
A: Heliers Holding Limited, directed by Mala Maharaj.

Q: What were the initial plans for the property?
A: Demolition and redevelopment into a large, modern mansion.

Q: What is the land size of the property?
A: Over 3000sqm.

Q: Was there any controversy surrounding the sale?
A: Concerns were raised about the potential demolition of the historic villa.

South African businessman tied to $1.5bn global scam network as Interpol issues red notice

by Chief Editor March 10, 2026
written by Chief Editor

From Cape Town to Cambodia: The Expanding Web of International Scam Networks

A South African businessman, Benjamin Mauerberger – also known as Ben Berger or Ben Smith – is at the center of an unfolding international scandal involving a staggering $1.5 billion. Accusations point to his role as a key figure in a complex money laundering operation linked to scam centers operating in Southeast Asia, particularly in Cambodia. This case isn’t isolated; it highlights a growing trend of transnational financial crime facilitated by individuals with international connections and a willingness to exploit vulnerable populations.

The Rise of Transnational Scam Operations

Mauerberger’s alleged operation isn’t simply about isolated incidents of fraud. Investigators describe sprawling compounds housing thousands of individuals forced to participate in sophisticated online scams. These scams target victims globally, promising high investment returns – a tactic reportedly employed by Mauerberger as early as the 2000s in Thailand. The scale of these operations suggests a highly organized network, capable of adapting and evading law enforcement.

A Family Legacy and Shifting Locations

Mauerberger’s background adds another layer to the story. He is reportedly a descendant of Morris Mauerberger, a co-founder of the Ackermans retail chain in South Africa. Leaving South Africa in his early 20s, he initially became involved in telephone scams in Thailand before resurfacing in connection with the Cambodian scam compounds. His ability to move between countries and establish connections in different regions underscores the challenges in tracking and prosecuting these transnational criminals.

Political Connections and the Role of Facilitators

The case is complicated by allegations of political connections. Mauerberger reportedly possesses a Cambodian passport identifying him as an advisor to the Senate. Reports suggest links between his associates and senior figures in Thailand’s government, including a significant cash transfer involving the wife of the country’s deputy prime minister. This highlights how political influence can be exploited to facilitate illicit financial activities.

The International Response and Asset Recovery

International authorities are taking action. An Interpol red notice has been issued for Mauerberger’s arrest, and the United States has placed him on its sanctions list. Singapore has seized assets linked to one of his alleged front companies, Capital Asia Investments, totaling approximately $140 million. These actions demonstrate a growing international effort to disrupt these networks and recover stolen funds.

The Hunt for the Wanderlust and the Evolving Tactics

Investigators believe Mauerberger was recently in Dubai but may have fled aboard his private yacht, the Wanderlust, valued at around $100 million. The yacht is currently believed to be in the Seychelles. This illustrates the sophisticated tactics employed by these criminals, utilizing luxury assets to evade capture and conceal their wealth. The employ of yachts and other high-value items is becoming increasingly common in cases of international financial crime.

The Future of Combating Transnational Scams

The Mauerberger case offers several insights into the future of combating transnational scams:

  • Increased International Cooperation: Effective prosecution requires seamless collaboration between law enforcement agencies across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Focus on Asset Recovery: Seizing assets is crucial not only to disrupt criminal operations but also to provide restitution to victims.
  • Targeting Facilitators: Identifying and prosecuting individuals who enable these scams – including those with political connections – is essential.
  • Enhanced Financial Intelligence: Improving the ability to track and analyze financial flows is critical to uncovering these networks.
  • Regulation of Digital Assets: As scams increasingly utilize cryptocurrencies and other digital assets, regulation and oversight are needed to prevent their misuse.

FAQ

What is an Interpol Red Notice? An Interpol Red Notice is an international request for law enforcement worldwide to locate and arrest a person suspected of a crime.

Where is Benjamin Mauerberger now? His current location is unknown, but he was last believed to be traveling aboard his yacht, the Wanderlust, which is reportedly in the Seychelles.

How much money is involved in this scam? The alleged scam network involves more than $1.5 billion.

What role did Singapore play? Singapore seized assets linked to one of Mauerberger’s alleged front companies, totaling approximately $140 million.

Pro Tip: Be extremely cautious of unsolicited investment offers, especially those promising high returns with little to no risk. Always verify the legitimacy of any investment opportunity before committing funds.

Did you recognize? The Cambodian government has been facing increasing pressure to crack down on scam compounds operating within its borders.

Record-Breaking Performances at Last Chance Invitational

Beyond the SEC Championships, LSU athletes continued to push their limits at the Last Chance Invitational in Auburn on February 27-28. Grace Palmer, Volodymyr Lisovets, and Guilherme Camossato each set new school records in their respective breaststroke events, demonstrating the program’s growing depth and talent.

Looking Ahead: NCAA Championships on the Horizon

The diving team will first compete at the NCAA Zone D Diving Regional hosted by Texas A&M from March 9-11. This regional will serve as a qualifier for the NCAA Championships. LSU will send nine swimmers to the women’s championship, taking place March 18-21 in Atlanta, Georgia. The qualifiers for the men’s championship, to be held March 25-28, will be announced on March 11, with the event also taking place at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
