Statements of researchers have just as much influence on the daily life as rarely before. For the F. A. Z. the allensbach Institute asks: How do the citizens during the crisis about the science?

Die-Corona-epidemic has not changed in the last few months in the everyday lives of citizens in many ways, not solid, but also their perception of the state, its actors, and also other groups in society. As has been quoted in the past few weeks, with good reason, frequently, the political science Thesis, according to which crises are the “hour of the Executive”. In fact, the surveys conducted by the Institute for demo copy to show all of Bach, is that the Prestige of the state and the government has grown in the current exception situation.

As much as the views of the government has changed in the crisis, the impression that the Germans of the science. Certainly, the extensive media coverage plays a role here, the abstract itself, rather, for many citizens, hard-to-reach statistical aspects, such as reproduction rates, infection probabilities and the ratio of the demographic, infection and death numbers with great thoroughness dedicated to. This media offers triggered a great deal of satisfaction. The Podcast of the Berlin virologist Christian Drosten recorded according to the information of the North German broadcasting company, in the meantime, more than 15 million views. It can be assumed that factual, in-depth, nuanced presentations of scientific issues in the media have had since the years Bernhard Grzimeks no comparable range more.

ARD radio studio Los Angeles and Menlo Park | NDR.de – News – NDR Info

Status: 01.08.2019 00:00 a.m.

The ARD studio Los Angeles is responsible for the west coast of the USA together with the “outpost” in Menlo Park. The reporting mainly focuses on California, Hollywood and Silicon Valley.

Katharina Wilhelm (studio manager, Hessischer Rundfunk)

Katharina Wilhelm

Katharina Wilhelm, born in Mainz in 1983, studied theater, film and media studies and German studies in Frankfurt am Main. The first jobs as a reporter came from the “Frankfurter Neue Presse”, after which she discovered a love for radio, television and the Internet. During her traineeship in Hessischer Rundfunk, she worked on radio for the departments of politics, Hessen and the environment.

Explaining complex relationships in an understandable way is the fine art of journalism for Katharina Wilhelm. She learned this not only on Hessischer Rundfunk, but also as a television author for the ZDF children’s news program “Logo”. For the web project “The Riddle Woman – Secrets in Botticelli’s Pictures” she was awarded the 1st prize by the Axel Springer Academy.

There is also a need for clarification in their new reporting area, the west coast of the USA. The ARD studio Los Angeles takes care of all topics that are relevant for Germany from Alaska to California. This includes, among other things, the special role of California, because the most populous US state has seen itself as an opponent of Washington’s politics since Donald Trump’s election.

In Silicon Valley, large companies and small start-ups are working on our digital future, in the northernmost state of Alaska, the very real effects of climate change are showing, and in Hollywood, social problems such as sexism and discrimination are becoming new not only in films, but also outside of sets negotiated.

Katharina Wilhelm has been working regularly as a representative in the ARD studio in Los Angeles since 2011, and as studio manager since August 2018.

Marcus Schuler

Marcus Schuler (born 1971) was born in Esslingen am Neckar in Baden-Württemberg. Since July 2017 he has been working as a correspondent in the ARD studio in Los Angeles. With one difference: the journalist from Bayerischer Rundfunk has his office in Silicon Valley – a good 600 kilometers north of LA. From there, he not only provides ARD with news from the tech mecca of the world, but with the whole range of topics that the US West Coast has to offer.

After graduating from high school, doing military service with the Bundeswehr (Radio Andernach) and internships with the emigrant newspaper “Aufbau” in New York, among other things, he volunteered at the BBC in London. He then studied politics in Bonn. In addition to his studies, he began to work for the SWF3 radio station in Baden-Baden, where he moderated the morning show.

In 1998 he received the Kurt Magnus Prize, which young ARD radio journalists receive. At Südwestrundfunk, he set up the first trimedia youth service from ARD, DASDING, for which his team and he received the then new Grimme Online Award in 2002.

In 2003, Marcus Schuler switched to Bayerischer Rundfunk, where he was responsible for ARD and everything digital as a manager. From 2015 he built up a new development department in the BR, which programs apps (BR24, Bayern2 app) as well as new digital services and products. In his free time, he produces the popular tech podcast “Geek-Week” with friends in Portland, Oregon and in Bern, Switzerland, which is also broadcast on Bavarian radio.

The anti-covid weapon from Mainz – morning briefing

Good morning dear readers,

have you ever had of Biontech belongs? Probably not. But now it is Mainz biotechnology company World famous in one fell swoop – because the Paul Ehrlich Institute authorized him to test a vaccine against Covid-19 on 200 people together with the US partner Pfizer. Company founder Ugur Sahin expects the first interim results at the end of June and approval – if successful – not before 2021.

Biontech belongs now Moderna (USA) and Cansino Biologics (China) among the pioneers among 80 Covid-19 vaccination projects worldwide, is analyzed by our medicine man Siegfried Hofmann in the current cover story. Biontech’s stock temporarily rose by almost 50 percent on Tuesday, and the company is now worth almost ten billion euros. Mainz, how it researches and laughs.

Top investor Klaus Hommels, Founder of the Lake Star Fund, knows everything about gimmicks and Quirks of the financial market. Therefore, listen carefully if he likes government aid for listed companies Tui and Adidas criticized. Here there are loans for companies, which could also simply make a capital increase, in which then mostly foreign shareholders would have to go along, says the capital professional in the Handelsblatt interview. “With the corporations we protect foreign investors”, continues Mosel Hommels – and thus aims at the Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawiris (Adidas) and on the Russians Alexei Mordashov (Tui). Theodor Fontane comes to mind: “Where there is a lot of money, there is always a ghost.”

With regard to the easing of the “lockdown” in Germany, Christian Drosten criticizes that there are now “free interpretations” of the easing and a lot of imagination in the economy.

If Germany is happy about the easing of the “lockdown”, the man, who has been a for weeks Virologist of the Republic occurs – as reliable as the Schäffler, who turn at noon at the carillon in front of Munich City Hall. He regrets very much these days, “that we are perhaps just about to completely lose our lead in Germany,” warns Christian Drosten from the Charité. One has to ask oneself “whether all of this still makes sense,” he says with a view to the reopened shopping malls.

There would now be “free interpretations” of the easing everywhere and a lot fantasy in the economy, Drosten said, and it would not surprise him if a situation arises in May or June “that we can no longer control”. Perhaps the Germans no longer follow the Warner as usual, but they still appreciate him: for his NDR-Podcast “The Corona Virus Update” has been nominated for the Grimme Online Award, Information category.

In his current studies, psychologist Stephan Grünewald is experiencing a political dichotomy among the people.

What does corona mean for the psyche of the Germans? I spent a long time discussing this with the psychologist Stephan Grünewald entertained, head of the Rheingold Institute and member of the Corona Expert Council of the NRW state government. He is actually experiencing one in his current studies political division in the people, he says: Some wanted a variant “Söder plus”, that is, a “leader” who is even more assertive and rules through more clearly, like Markus Söder So in Bavaria. The others, on the other hand, think that the lockdown limits deprivation of liberty, you need more open dealings and more Personal responsibility. This is where the prime minister comes in Armin Laschet from NRW, “the type of moderating politician who takes citizens with him and includes all risks.”

The climate in the Grand coalition had recently become rougher again. The initial one Magic the common fight against corona seemed to have evaporated. But now the tops of union and SPD at her meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel a coup: because of the corona crisis, you lift that Short-time work allowance at. Now it is no longer 60 and 67 percent of the last income, but much higher rates.

The aid payment should increase to up to 80 percent and for parents up to 87 percent, staggered according to the duration of the benefit. More than 700,000 companies have already registered short-time work in Germany – the new benefit will probably be the one Opinion values per Union.

It’s been a bit since the lingerie brand “Victoria’s Secret” hip and was an ornament of the parent company L Brands. That was before “Metoo” and “Body Shaming”. However, even the resale of the former cult company has burst. Financial investor Sycamore Partners Bang on Fall ends the February 2005 takeover of 55 percent of the capital for $ 525 million.

To run the business back, the refugees have one legal action filed with a Delaware court. Justification: Because L brands The deal was null and void in the corona crisis, when several branches were closed, staff was on leave, and rent payments were suspended. The former owner of “Victoria’s Secret” sees it completely differently and in turn thumps it up Performance of the contract. The old wisdom “Sex Sells” seems to be overridden in this dispute.

The granddaughter of Walt Disney’s brother Roy is upset that the entertainment company more than a hundred thousand low earners on vacation in his parks after the managers got lavish bonuses and the shareholders got a nice dividend. “What the actual F *** ?????”, tweeted Mrs. Disney and criticized the company for not caring about its workers. A woman’s shadow lies over SAP – Morning Briefing

Good morning dear readers,

if Germany can show something with pride in the battle of the big digital corporations, it is SAP from Walldorf, the invention of five ex-IBM forces 48 years ago. So it borders on self-harm that after only six months co-CEO Jennifer Morgan already logged out again. So forget all the great portraits of the first boss in the Dax, delete the hymns of praise of the chairman of the board and co-founder Hasso Plattner. According to our knowledge, the implosion at the top is also the result of an internal power struggle. Co-boss Christian Klein carries out a strong standardization and centralization, the American wanted the subsidiaries more independence to let. Even the PR candle from Walldorf cannot hide the dispute between vanities, according to which clarity and determination are necessary in the Corona period. Aristotle thought that to hide a mistake with a lie was to replace a spot with a hole.

In the beginning it advised Robert Koch Institute refraining from autopsying Covid 19 dead, it is too dangerous. From Basel in Switzerland, where there were fewer concerns, the first results of an examination of 20 coronavirus deaths are now coming. They suffered from high blood pressure and Overweight, but above all there was a serious disturbance of the Microcirculation the lungs – the oxygen exchange no longer worked. The Hamburg medical examiner Klaus Püschel also had 100 virus victims examined, according to a report by NDR, WDR and “Süddeutscher Zeitung”. Similar to Basel is also here none of the dead without previous illnesses been.

Has become a trend researcher Amy Webb made a name worldwide. This week the New York professor speaks for Strategic future planning in the podcast “Handelsblatt Disrupt” with my colleague Sebastian Matthes. In the interview, Webb predicts the division of the world into two: in part with the People’s Republic of China and its partners, who used a digital surveillance infrastructure, as well as the rest of the other countries. China is using the crisis to expand the Artificial intelligenceto collect even more data, believes Webb. But data are like Algorithms the weapons of the future. And so it does Futurologist in the end worries “that the global pandemic will trigger an economic-technological war that we have never seen before”.

The days of rest in the Dax group Wirecard are over: Today, the final special report of KPMG’s auditors is to be published – on allegations dubious contracts and partners who have been featured in a Financial Times (FT) series. Bafin boss Felix Hufeld wants to study the work of the auditors carefully: “Payment service providers, like banks, must adhere to a comprehensive set of rules.” Bafin’s own investigations into who is involved strategic sales benefited from Wirecard shares prior to the release of “FT” items have been completed. The investigation by the Munich public prosecutor’s office, which uses the Bafin work, continues. According to our information, the German auditing agency for accounting has meanwhile also an investigation of the Wirecard balance sheet check initiated. So this company will soon be as open as an oyster after consumption.

Series hits like “Tiger King”: Netflix increases the number of paid subscriptions.

(Photo: AFP)

Corona time is Netflix-Time. You follow “social distancing”, stay at home and watch series after series, film after film. There is nothing else to be inferred from the most recent figures, the Streaming primus announced last night. After that, the number of paid subscriptions rose in the first quarter by 15.8 million to almost 183 million – which exceeded both the own forecasts and the expectations of the analysts. Series hits like “Tiger King” around Joe Exotic and its big cat zoo are so well received that Netflix is expecting 7.5 million new customers worldwide this quarter. Since the profit has also doubled at the moment, the share is growing again. The company of Reed Hastings is now worth more than the big rival Disney.

The Germans decided to end the season prematurely Handball player – and selected it THW Kiel according to an elaborated calculation model to master. in the Soccer After the Belgian league, the Dutch league also decided to end the season due to the corona restrictions. And in Scotland there is also an end in sight – that of the European association Uefa, contrary to what was announced, will not be punished with the exclusion of clubs from competitions. New regulations that take the corona virus into account are to be presented tomorrow, Thursday. That day, too German soccer Bundesliga decide that ghost games should continue in May. This is the only way to secure a rate of EUR 230 million from Sky for broadcasting rights – and many clubs first before broke rescue.

And then there’s the world performance artist Marina Abramovicwho first silenced her for years Online campaigns breaks against them. “Can’t you stop doing that?” Asks Abramovic, “don’t you see, that’s the art I’ve been doing for 50 years?” She really isn’t a “satanist” – a suspicion that her opponents have been stirring up since becoming one “Spirit Cooking” dinner loaded. Recently, ongoing anonymous online protests have resulted in Microsoft a work with Abramovic, who promoted digital technologies, removed from the YouTube platform after 24,000 dislikes. She is looking for a positive way out of the matter, says the native Serb, “anxiety is the worst human emotion ”.

I wish you a positive, completely fear-free day. And if it consoles you: in 2020 we will experience art and performances again in the museum.

Christian Drosten can also be wrong

AOn February 26, the NDR radio program hosted the first of those conversations with the Berlin virologist Christian Drosten, of which thirty-two episodes have been broadcast to date. Recently, they have only taken place three times a week, because if you want to say something, you also have to have time to read; apart from all other appointments in Drost. The programs have now become a benchmark for science communication. How?

Jürgen Kaube

On the one hand, it’s up to the scientist. Drosten has been dealing with viral diseases for almost twenty years and corona viruses since 2003. He does research himself, and not in the broadest sense, but precisely on questions that are currently at stake. Accordingly, he knows a great deal what is published in his field. This also makes him able to judge when he comes across studies that he considers not well done or when figures and claims appear completely implausible to him. The British medical sociologist Phil Strong once noted that epidemics often not only spread viruses unchecked, but also morally charged opinions. In this respect, the task of science communication is twofold: describing the findings and combating prejudices.

Criminals copy the NRW Ministry of Economics website

Emergency Aid Fraud

In connection with the emergency aid, fraudsters have set up many fake sites to tap the financial aid.

(Photo: dpa)

Dusseldorf There has been another fraud case related to Corona Emergency Aid. As reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, criminals have copied the website of the NRW Ministry of Economics in order to get the data from companies seeking help. The fraudsters wanted to redirect the money to their own bank account. This emerges from research by NDR, WDR and Süddeutscher Zeitung. Representatives of the NRW Ministry and the Ministry of Economic Affairs have confirmed this.

The research reveals that last Wednesday, April 8, the fake page Wirtschaft-nrw.info was registered, which also contains an application form for Corona emergency aid. The website server is located in the United States and the operators are hidden behind a concealment service from Panama.

The fake page looks so real that even for experts, the fake was not recognizable at first glance. Investigators in the Cybercrime Competence Center of the State Criminal Police Office are now concerned with removing the fake side from the net. The real site was temporarily shut down on Thursday due to earlier attempts to defraud, but should soon start again.

More: At least 3,500 applicants have been drawn to the wrong website by criminals. The authorities’ response lasted almost a week.

On Saturday, the police in Hamburg did not register any major violations of the corona requirements.

Many people in Hamburg used the sunny Saturday for a walk on the Easter weekend. For the most part, they adhered to the distance requirement and the other restrictions that apply in the Ordinance of the Senate against the spread of the coronavirus are prescribed. The Hamburg police said.

Motorists sent back in Wedel

Only in the Wedel area on the Elbe did the police have to send back around a quarter of the cars during vehicle inspections because they were traveling to local recreation areas for tourist purposes. About 110 of around 450 cars were rejected. Pedestrians and cyclists were not the focus of the police. Last weekend, walkers were partially sent back from Schleswig-Holstein to Hamburg. That had caused criticism in the Hanseatic city.

Corona could lower the broadcasting fee

View over the ZDF site in Mainz with the digital news studio (left, with logo on the roof)
Picture: Picture Alliance

ARD and ZDF show strengths in the crisis. Politicians should therefore change the strategic direction of public service broadcasters and lower the broadcasting fee. Guest contribution by an economist.

I.n In times of horror at the human and economic consequences of the global spread of the new corona virus (Covid-19), politicians and the media have criticized the appropriateness of the increase envisaged as a “contribution” from 2021, but actually a tax the corresponding levy from private households to finance the public service broadcasting system has largely been silenced. On the contrary, there are increasing voices that the pandemic impressively demonstrates the need for a strong public service broadcasting and that opposition to the increase of 86 cents per month recommended by the Kef is downright small.

This view underpins record-breaking numbers of viewers of news and information programs from ARD stations and ZDF. The 8:00 p.m. daily show on March 22nd was followed by 12.2 million people, which corresponds to an audience market share of around a third. 7.5 million people saw the “ARD extra: The Corona location” on March 25 (market share 20.4 percent). A “ZDF special” on the pandemic reached 4.6 million citizens on March 12 (market share 17.1 percent). Public service broadcasters put valuable podcasts on the virus online, such as the NDR with the expert Christian Drosten. They are in the process of expanding their children’s and educational programs in order to counteract the negative consequences of the closure of daycare centers and schools. They broadcast cultural events that take place without an audience in order to reduce social isolation and boredom among viewers who are unintentionally locked up in their homes.
