A ‘Super Sidewalk’ is Coming to Ninth Avenue in NYC Before the World Cup

by Rachel Morgan News Editor March 24, 2026
written by Rachel Morgan News Editor

Ninth Avenue in Manhattan is undergoing a major redesign between West 34th and 50th Streets, with work already underway. The changes aim to improve conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus riders ahead of a busy summer.

A Focus on Pedestrians and Safety

The most significant change will be a new “super sidewalk” adding 9 feet of space along the avenue. This comes as the Department of Transportation notes that pedestrians already comprise over half of Ninth Avenue’s users. New concrete pedestrian islands will similarly be constructed at intersections to improve safety.

Did You Know? The protected bike lane on Ninth Avenue debuted in 2007 and was a historic first for the city.

The redesign also addresses safety concerns. This stretch of Ninth Avenue has been designated a Vision Zero priority corridor, with 37 people killed or seriously injured in the past five years.

Improvements for Cyclists and Bus Riders

The existing protected bike lane will nearly double in width, expanding from 5 feet to 9 feet. A new, half-mile-long curbside bus lane will be painted red on the west side of Ninth Avenue and operate during peak hours – 7–10am and 4–7pm – to reduce congestion and speed up service.

Expert Insight: Prioritizing multiple modes of transportation – pedestrian, bicycle, and bus – reflects a growing understanding of urban planning that seeks to balance the needs of all users and reduce reliance on private vehicles.

Construction is currently focused on repaving and building pedestrian islands, with a completion date set for early fall. Additional markings will be added during non-game days of the FIFA World Cup this summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will the redesign be completed?

The project is set to wrap up in full by early fall.

Why is this redesign happening now?

The overhaul is being prompt-tracked ahead of this summer’s FIFA World Cup, when increased foot traffic is expected.

What is a Vision Zero corridor?

It is a stretch of roadway identified as a priority for safety improvements due to a history of traffic injuries and fatalities. This section of Ninth Avenue has seen 37 people killed or seriously injured in the past five years.

Will these changes truly alleviate congestion and improve the experience for those using Ninth Avenue?

The First 50 Years’ marks Apple’s April 1 anniversary

by Chief Editor March 22, 2026
written by Chief Editor

From Apple I to AI: Charting 50 Years of Innovation and What Lies Ahead

Apple’s journey, from a garage startup in 1976 to a tech titan, is a story of relentless innovation. As the company prepares for its 50th-anniversary celebrations, a new definitive biography, “Apple: The First 50 Years” by David Pogue, offers a comprehensive look back – and a glimpse forward. But what does the future hold for the company that consistently reshapes how we interact with technology?

The Enduring Mission: Simplicity and User Experience

Throughout its history, Apple has maintained a core mission: to make advanced technology accessible and enjoyable for everyone. This focus on user experience, as highlighted by Pogue, is a key differentiator. Even as competitors like Samsung and Nokia evolved from different origins – dried fish and wood pulp, respectively – Apple has remained steadfast in its commitment to simplicity.

Pro Tip: Apple’s success isn’t just about inventing new technologies; it’s about refining them to be intuitive and delightful for the average user.

The Neo: A Return to Accessibility?

The recent release of the MacBook Neo, an entry-level laptop priced at $600, signals a potential shift back towards accessibility. Pogue predicts the Neo will be in high demand, suggesting a market appetite for affordable Apple products. This move could broaden Apple’s customer base and challenge the perception of the brand as exclusively premium.

Apple’s just-released entry-level MacBook Neo laptop comes in four colors — silver, blush, citrus and indigo. (Apple)

The AI Equation: Catching Up and Leading

Apple was initially caught off guard by the rapid advancements in generative AI. Though, the company appears to be recalibrating its strategy. Pogue notes internal restructuring and a renewed focus on AI development. Apple’s approach, historically, has been to prioritize polish and integration over being first to market. This strategy could prove successful in the AI space, delivering a refined and user-friendly AI experience when it’s ready.

The Future of Wearables: From Vision Pro to Smart Glasses

The Vision Pro, Apple’s mixed reality headset, represents a bold but currently impractical step. While technologically impressive, its weight, cost, and discomfort limit its widespread adoption. However, the technologies developed for the Vision Pro are likely to migrate to more practical form factors, particularly smart glasses. Pogue suggests that smart glasses could turn into the next major Apple product category, offering a seamless blend of digital information and the real world, powered by AI.

Steve Jobs’ Legacy: Innovation and Aesthetic Perfection

The impact of Steve Jobs on Apple’s culture and product design remains profound. Pogue’s interviews reveal Jobs’ obsessive attention to detail – even down to the curvature of icon corners. This relentless pursuit of aesthetic perfection and a focus on anticipating user needs are hallmarks of Apple’s success. While Tim Cook has led Apple to unprecedented financial heights, the company may be missing the consistent stream of groundbreaking platforms that defined the Jobs era.

Did you know? Steve Wozniak, Apple’s co-founder, is known for his generosity, even giving away stock to Apple employees who hadn’t benefited from the company’s early success.

The Importance of Access and Collaboration

Pogue’s book benefited from unprecedented access to Apple executives, designers, and engineers. This collaboration highlights the importance of open communication and a willingness to share insights. Apple’s willingness to grant this access suggests a desire to shape the narrative around its 50th anniversary and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What was the original Apple I computer? It was a primitive computer transformed into a successful company by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976.
  • Who is David Pogue? He is a correspondent for CBS Sunday Morning and a former tech columnist for Macworld and the New York Times, and the author of “Apple: The First 50 Years.”
  • What is the MacBook Neo? It’s Apple’s recently released entry-level laptop, priced at $600.
  • What is Apple’s approach to AI? Apple prioritizes polish and integration over being first to market with new technologies.

Philadelphia actor enjoys exploring Chekhov

by Chief Editor March 15, 2026
written by Chief Editor

The Evolving Landscape of Performance: From Stage to Stream

Philadelphia’s vibrant arts scene continues to demonstrate its adaptability, with artists like Justin Jain pushing boundaries through innovative adaptations and a willingness to blend personal narrative with classic works. Jain’s upcoming performance of Chekhov’s “The Dangers of Tobacco” at Theatre Exile isn’t a traditional adaptation, but a personalization, weaving his experiences as a queer, first-generation Filipino-American artist into the fabric of the play. This trend – artists using established works as a springboard for deeply personal exploration – is gaining momentum.

Solo Performance and the Power of Personal Narrative

Jain’s approach highlights a growing interest in solo performance as a vehicle for exploring identity and cultural heritage. He found a format for expressing his experiences through Chekhov’s structure, allowing digressions and personal anecdotes to enrich the original text. This mirrors a broader movement in theater where artists are increasingly using their own stories to connect with audiences on a more intimate level.

Streaming Takes Center Stage: From ‘Peaky Blinders’ to ‘Yellowstone’

The entertainment landscape is undeniably shifting towards streaming, and several developments demonstrate this. The release of “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” on Netflix continues the popular series’ legacy, even as the expanding “Yellowstone” universe, with latest spinoffs like “The Madison,” illustrates the demand for serialized storytelling. This proliferation of content reflects a consumer preference for on-demand entertainment and a willingness to invest in extended narratives.

The Future of Franchises: Expanding Universes and Dedicated Nights

The success of franchises like “Yellowstone” is prompting networks to explore dedicated programming blocks, similar to NBC’s “Chicago” nights. This strategy aims to cultivate a loyal audience and maximize viewership by offering a cohesive viewing experience. The expansion of the “Yellowstone” universe, with “Dutton Ranch” on the horizon, exemplifies this trend.

Classical Music’s Enduring Appeal: Rachmaninoff and the Philadelphia Orchestra

Despite the rise of popular music and streaming, classical music continues to thrive, as evidenced by pianist Haochen Zhang’s upcoming performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Zhang’s ability to balance dramatic intensity with nuanced sensitivity, showcased in previous recitals, promises a compelling interpretation of Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.” This demonstrates the enduring appeal of live orchestral performances and the importance of showcasing talented soloists.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation in Classical Performance

The Philadelphia Orchestra’s programming, pairing Rachmaninoff with Schumann’s “Symphony No. 2,” reflects a commitment to both established repertoire and innovative pairings. This approach is crucial for attracting new audiences and maintaining the relevance of classical music in the 21st century.

Sixers Announcer Retires

Matt Cord, the long-time voice of the Philadelphia 76ers, is retiring after 28 years. His departure marks the end of an era for the team and its fans. Cord will continue his role at WMMR (93.3 FM).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where can I identify tickets for Justin Jain’s performance? Tickets and details are available at theatreexile.org.
  • Where can I stream “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man”? The film is available on Netflix.
  • What other “Yellowstone” spinoffs are in development? “Dutton Ranch” is set to premiere this year, joining “1883,” “1923,” and “Marshals.”

Pro Tip: Support local theaters and artists! Attending performances like Justin Jain’s not only provides a unique cultural experience but also contributes to the vitality of the Philadelphia arts community.

A Magical Bay Celebration with Disney Cruise Line

by Chief Editor March 13, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Disney’s Arrival in Singapore: A Wave of Change for Asian Cruising and Experiential Tourism

The recent arrival of the Disney Adventure in Singapore, marked by a spectacular fireworks display over Marina Bay from March 13-15, signals more than just a new ship; it represents a pivotal shift in the Asian cruise industry and the evolving landscape of experiential tourism. This isn’t simply about adding another vessel to the ocean – it’s about redefining what a cruise vacation can be.

The Rise of ‘Cruisetainment’ and Floating Theme Parks

The Disney Adventure, Disney Cruise Line’s largest ship to date, isn’t marketed as a mere mode of transport, but as a destination in itself. With seven themed areas – Disney Imagination Garden, Toy Story Place, San Fransokyo Street, Town Square, Wayfinder Bay, Disney Discovery Reef and Marvel Landing – the ship functions as a floating theme park. This concept, often termed “cruisetainment,” is gaining significant traction. Passengers are increasingly seeking immersive experiences that go beyond traditional port calls.

This trend mirrors a broader shift in the travel industry. Consumers, particularly millennials and Gen Z, prioritize experiences over material possessions. A 2023 report by Deloitte highlighted that 74% of travelers believe experiences are the most important part of their vacation. Disney is capitalizing on this by offering a self-contained world of entertainment, dining, and recreation, minimizing the need for extensive shore excursions.

Singapore as a Hub for Disney Cruise Line and Regional Tourism

The choice of Singapore as the first Asian port for Disney Cruise Line is strategic. The Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore is equipped to handle large vessels, and the city-state’s robust tourism infrastructure provides a seamless experience for passengers. The collaboration with United Overseas Bank (UOB), Marina Bay Sands, and the Singapore Tourism Board underscores the commitment to establishing Singapore as a key cruise hub.

This development is expected to have a ripple effect on the regional tourism economy. While the initial voyages from Singapore are entirely at sea, the potential for future itineraries to include destinations across Southeast Asia is high. This could boost tourism revenue for neighboring countries and create new opportunities for local businesses.

Immersive Experiences and Themed Entertainment at Sea

The Disney Adventure’s design reflects a growing demand for immersive and themed entertainment. The ship’s areas are not simply decorated; they are meticulously crafted to transport passengers into the worlds of Disney, Pixar, and Marvel. This level of detail extends to dining, entertainment, and even character interactions.

This focus on immersion is also evident in the nautical-themed festivities extending beyond the ship itself. Quests at locations like Gardens by the Bay and the Esplanade, offering prizes like limited-edition medallions and cruise vacations, create a holistic Disney experience that extends into the city.

The Future of Cruise Technology and Entertainment

The Disney Adventure boasts the longest roller coaster at sea, indicating a trend towards incorporating cutting-edge technology and thrilling entertainment options into cruise ship design. Expect to notice further integration of virtual reality, augmented reality, and interactive gaming experiences on future cruise ships.

the ship’s capacity – room for 6,700 passengers and 2,500 crew – suggests a move towards larger vessels that can offer a wider range of amenities and entertainment options. However, this also raises questions about sustainability and the environmental impact of larger ships.

FAQ

Q: What makes the Disney Adventure different from other cruise ships?
A: It’s the largest ship Disney has ever built and the first to be based in Asia, offering seven uniquely themed areas designed for immersive experiences.

Q: Where is the Disney Adventure currently located?

Q: What kind of voyages are offered on the Disney Adventure?
A: The maiden voyages are 3-night and 4-night voyages at sea, with no port stops.

Denverite Angel Martinez joins new Netflix dating show, ‘Age of Attraction’

by Chief Editor March 11, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Is Age Just a Number? The Rise of Age-Flexible Dating

The concept of age as a barrier in romance is being actively challenged. Netflix’s new reality series, “Age of Attraction,” debuting March 11, 2026, throws a unique twist into the dating world: prohibiting contestants from asking each other’s age. This isn’t just a television gimmick. it reflects a growing societal shift in how we perceive relationships and attraction.

Beyond ‘Love is Blind’: A Different Approach to Connection

While shows like “Love is Blind” focus on personality before physical appearance, “Age of Attraction” seems to be subtly questioning conventional beauty standards tied to youth. The series features 40 singles, ranging in age from 22 to 60, and aims to see if genuine connection can flourish without the preconceived notions often associated with age gaps.

Denver’s Angel Martinez: Challenging Age Biases

Angel Martinez, a Denver-based entrepreneur and owner of Angel Aesthetics, is one of the singles participating in the show. Her experience highlights the double-edged sword of ageism. Martinez, 47, has faced both judgment for dating younger men and dismissiveness from those older who questioned her age. She noted that she’s been told she’s “practically my son’s age” and even received comments about her being “too old.”

Martinez’s story underscores a common experience: we often categorize potential partners based on age, creating self-limiting beliefs. She admitted to doing the same, placing men into categories based on their age and what that implied about their lifestyle and expectations.

The Shifting Landscape of Modern Dating

The rise of age-flexible dating isn’t happening in a vacuum. Several factors are contributing to this trend:

  • Increased Longevity: People are living longer, healthier lives, and remaining single for longer periods.
  • Changing Societal Norms: Traditional relationship timelines are becoming less rigid.
  • Financial Independence: More women are financially independent, allowing them to choose partners based on compatibility rather than financial security.
  • The Influence of Media: Shows like “Age of Attraction” and celebrity relationships with significant age gaps are normalizing these dynamics.

The Beauty Industry and Age Acceptance

As a veteran of the beauty industry, Martinez recognizes the pressure to maintain a youthful appearance. However, she champions a different approach at her spa, focusing on skin health and confidence at any age. This reflects a broader movement towards embracing natural aging and challenging unrealistic beauty standards.

“I care more about the health of the skin and you feeling confident at 47, 65, 35 and not trying to be 20 again,” Martinez said.

What Does the Future Hold for Age-Gap Relationships?

It’s likely we’ll see continued growth in age-flexible dating. Technology may play a role, with dating apps potentially offering features that allow users to prioritize compatibility factors beyond age. However, overcoming societal stigmas will be crucial. Open communication, mutual respect, and a shared understanding of values are essential for any successful relationship, regardless of age.

Pro Tip: Focus on shared interests and values when seeking a partner. Age is just one factor among many.

FAQ

Q: Is age-gap dating becoming more common?
A: Yes, societal norms are shifting, and more people are open to relationships with significant age differences.

Q: What are the challenges of age-gap relationships?
A: Potential challenges include differing life stages, societal judgment, and navigating financial or family planning differences.

Q: Where can I watch “Age of Attraction”?
A: “Age of Attraction” premieres on Netflix on March 11, 2026.

Q: What is the age range of the singles on “Age of Attraction”?
A: The singles range in age from 22 to 60.

After three decades, Elefante still finds magic onstage – Redlands Daily Facts

by Rachel Morgan News Editor March 10, 2026
written by Rachel Morgan News Editor

For more than three decades, Elefante has transformed heartbreak, love and longing into songs that have turn into part of Latin rock’s emotional soundtrack.

Elefante Celebrates 30 Years of Music

Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the iconic rock en español band Elefante finds itself in a place few artists reach: still touring, still evolving, and still connecting with audiences across generations, according to frontman Javi Cantero.

“It’s amazing to be with your audience for 30 years,” Cantero emotionally said. “Not everyone can do that, so for us it really feels like a blessing.”

Formed in 1993, Elefante has earned more than 20 international Top 10 hits and two Latin Grammy nominations. The band’s 30 Años tour will include performances in Southern California on March 12 at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego, March 13 at the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside, and Oct. 10 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Did You Know? Elefante was originally known as Cuarto Sol.

Cantero believes the band is currently at its best. “I think we are in the best moment as a band,” he said. “Now we are more mature and we can enjoy the tours differently. There’s no stress, no tension anymore, we’re just happy playing music.”

The band’s success has surpassed even their early aspirations. “You always have the illusion of playing on big stages and visiting different countries,” Cantero said. “But nobody can really imagine how far you’re going to go. For us, the reality went beyond the dreams.”

Expert Insight: A three-decade career in the music industry is a significant achievement, demonstrating not only artistic talent but also adaptability and a strong connection with a dedicated fanbase. Elefante’s continued success suggests a commitment to evolving their sound while remaining true to the emotional core that initially resonated with listeners.

Elefante’s music is now reaching a new generation of fans. “Now you observe kids who are 17 years old who weren’t even born when our first song came out, and they’re at the shows singing not just one song but many of them,” Cantero said.

According to Cantero, the band’s songwriting, which centers on universal emotions like love, sadness, and excitement, is key to this cross-generational appeal. “Everyone can identify with those feelings, and I think that’s the key to our connection with people.”

The upcoming tour will be a journey through the band’s history, featuring songs from their earliest releases to their most recent material, with new arrangements and an acoustic segment. Cantero noted that the stage design and visuals will also be new.

The song “Ángel” continues to hold a special place for Cantero. “When we play that song, it still excites me like the first time I heard it,” he said.

The band’s return to Southern California is particularly meaningful, as they have built a strong following among Mexican and Mexican American fans in the region. “California is like our second home,” Cantero said. “We have friends there and even family, so every time we go it feels very natural for us. It’s always special to come back.”

Cantero believes Elefante’s story represents perseverance and honesty in music. “If you believe in what you’re doing and maintain going, you can build something meaningful over time.”

The Cleveland comedy scene is experiencing a surge in recognition, and the 6th Annual Cleveland Comedy Awards, taking place March 11th at Hilarities 4th Street Theatre, embodies this momentum. More than just a night of laughs, this year’s awards signify a shift towards supporting comedians beyond mere accolades.

From Trophies to Tangible Support

Traditionally, awards ceremonies offer prestige, but often little practical assistance. This year, Comedic CLE is changing that. According to Brent Gambrel, organizers are now offering prize money – ranging from $250 to $500 – to winners in peer-nominated categories. This financial boost is intended to empower comedians to invest in their careers, whether through travel, equipment, or professional development.

Recognizing Diverse Talent: New Award Categories

The awards themselves highlight different facets of comedic success. The “Road Warrior” award celebrates comedians who actively tour and build audiences outside of Northeast Ohio. The “Juggernaut Award” recognizes individuals who have a significant, widespread impact on the comedy community – be it through frequent performances or industry support. Gambrel explains the Juggernaut Award acknowledges those who are “everywhere all the time, makes a big impact on the comedy community.”

A Night of Performances and “Chaos”

Attendees can expect more than just an awards presentation. The event promises over an hour of stand-up performances, hosted by Elijah Nevels, the 2025 Comedian of the Year, who boasts a substantial online following. Additional performances will be provided by Samantha Archual, Logan Bruce, and Roast Battle League Cleveland. Dean Schnurr of The Funny Bus, a sponsor, emphasizes the importance of supporting emerging comedic talent in the region.

Hilarities 4th Street Theatre: A Hub for Comedy

The event’s location, Hilarities 4th Street Theatre, is a cornerstone of Cleveland’s comedy landscape. The venue provides a professional platform for both established and up-and-coming comedians. Tickets for the 6th Annual Cleveland Comedy Awards are $12 for general admission, with doors opening at 6:45 p.m.

The Future of Local Comedy: A Growing Ecosystem

The changes implemented by Comedic CLE reflect a broader trend: a growing emphasis on sustainability and professional development within local comedy scenes. Providing financial support, alongside recognition, can help comedians overcome common barriers to entry and build viable careers. This approach fosters a more robust and resilient comedy ecosystem.

Pro Tip:

Networking is key in the comedy world. Events like the Cleveland Comedy Awards offer valuable opportunities to connect with fellow comedians, industry professionals, and potential collaborators.
