To spotlight his achievements concerning public safety and crime, President Donald Trump is scheduled to head to the Nassau County Police Academy in suburban Long Island on Friday, where the White House announced he will unveil fresh FBI crime figures demonstrating a drop in violent crime for 2025. According to the White House, the data will show year-over-year decreases in murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

Political Stakes and Local Races in New York

The Friday visit is aimed at boosting Republican candidates in closely contested races across New York ahead of the November midterms. In 2024, Trump secured a narrow victory in Nassau County, capturing it for the GOP for the initial time in over twenty years. The county is home to two Democratic House seats that Republicans view as winnable this fall, alongside Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Trump-endorsed Republican challenging Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.

According to the White House, Trump will be joined in Nassau County by Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel. Republican strategist Matt Gorman said the visit stands to boost Blakeman and GOP challengers looking to unseat Democratic incumbents in Nassau County districts. Michael LiPetri Jr. is challenging Rep. Tom Suozzi in New York’s 3rd Congressional District, while Jeanine Driscoll is opposing Rep. Lauren Gillen in the 4th Congressional District.

Public safety has become a prominent focal point in the gubernatorial race, with both contenders asserting they boast a superior record on the issue. Hochul previously visited a different Long Island police department in July to announce a statewide investment in policing technology. Responding to the upcoming visit, Hochul campaign spokesperson Ryan Radulovacki stated that the governor has invested billions in public safety to protect New Yorkers.

Contrasting Strategies and Public Polling

Republicans view safety as a cornerstone issue that appeals to Trump’s base and suburban swing voters. Gorman noted that crime is an issue where Republicans feel comfortable going on offense. However, Trump’s visit arrives as he faces lagging approval ratings on other issues, including the economy and the ongoing war in Iran. A poll conducted by AP-NORC in August 2025 revealed that crime management stood out as one of Trump’s top strengths, though his backing on the topic dropped by 10 points by December 2025.

White House spokesperson Lauren Bis defended the administration’s record, stating that Trump promised to make America safe again and that data proves he has done just that. In contrast, Radulovacki criticized the event, arguing that Blakeman is bringing Trump to tour a county where violent crime spiked to decade highs and accusing Trump’s ICE agents of abusing power.

While Trump often highlights his efforts to curb crime by deploying the National Guard in Washington, New Orleans, and other Democrat-led cities, his crime-reduction claims have faced pushback. This week, Trump directed sharp criticism at the Center for American Progress, issuing a lawsuit threat against the progressive think tank stemming from a study concluding that National Guard deployments failed to lower crime rates. Without providing evidence, Trump asserted in a social media post that crime is way down since he took office.

Jesse Hunt, a Republican strategist, argued that highlighting crime reduction offers a chance to reach voters across political and class divisions. Conversely, crime experts often caution against drawing too much from single-year changes in crime statistics, encouraging a focus on long-term patterns instead.
