Reserve Bank of New Zealand officials announced the appointment of Rebecca Williams to the Monetary Policy Committee, bringing institutional forecasting experience to the central bank’s rate-setting body ahead of an upcoming review. Finance Minister Nicola Willis stated that Williams brings strong institutional knowledge to the committee, pointing to her extensive background inside the central bank’s economics division.
Institutional Knowledge and Background
Williams joined the Reserve Bank in 2010 after graduating from the University of Canterbury with a BCom (Hons) in Economics and a BA in History. Over the past decade and a half, she has held various roles within the bank’s economics team. Reserve Bank chairman Rodger Finlay noted that Williams has worked extensively in monetary policy and forecasting, which includes advising the Monetary Policy Committee on the current state of the New Zealand economy. Reserve Bank Governor Anna Breman added that Williams’s many years of experience in economic analysis and forecasting, alongside her leadership of analysts, will serve as a real asset to the committee’s work.
Composition of the Monetary Policy Committee
When the Monetary Policy Committee next convenes to review the Official Cash Rate on October 28, the roster will comprise Anna Breman, Karen Silk, Rebecca Williams, Paul Conway, Prasanna Gai, Carl Hansen, and Hayley Gourley. By statutory requirement, the committee must consist of four members who work at the Reserve Bank and three externals. Following the October meeting, the committee will temporarily lose a member when assistant governor Karen Silk departs in mid-December, five months before her five-year term concludes. To manage this transition, Silk’s role will be split into two separate assistant governor positions covering monetary policy, and payments and cash. The Reserve Bank board plans to recommend a candidate to the finance minister for the monetary policy portfolio, who will subsequently join the policy committee.
Did you know? The Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee operates under a mandatory makeup rule requiring a balance of four internal central bank officials and three externals.
