Sri Lankan Navy Detains Three in Golden Smuggling Haul
In a major crackdown on gold smuggling, the Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended three individuals and seized a significant amount of gold. This latest operation is part of the navy’s ongoing efforts to curb smuggling activities in the region.
The detainees, two Sri Lankans and one Indian national, were intercepted along with the illicit cargo while attempting to transport it via sea. The seized gold, weighing approximately 2.5 kg, is estimated to be worth around LKR 6 million (approximately USD 33,000).
"We have been conducting regular patrols and surveillance to prevent such activities," said a navy spokesperson. "This seizure is a testament to our commitment to maintaining peace and security in our territorial waters."
This isn’t the first time the Sri Lankan Navy has intercepted gold-smuggling attempts. Last year, they confiscated over 6 kg of gold worth LKR 15 million (USD 85,000) from a group of suspects.
Authorities hope that such operations will serve as a deterrent to potential smugglers, encouraging them to operate within the bounds of the law. The three detainees are currently being held for further investigation.
