A Tulare County Sheriff’s Office detective was shot and killed during a confrontation in Porterville, California, on Thursday. The detective was assisting with serving an eviction notice when the shooting occurred.
Deadly Confrontation During Eviction
Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux stated that deputies were serving an eviction notice at a home on Brian Avenue near North Salisbury Street around 10:40 a.m. When shots were fired. The suspect, 59-year-old David Morales, reportedly “laid in wait” and immediately opened fire on the deputies.
Detective Randy Hoppert was struck by gunfire and transported to Sierra View Medical Center in Porterville, where he later died. Sheriff Boudreaux indicated that transporting Hoppert to a trauma center in Fresno by helicopter was considered, but his condition was too unstable for air travel. He died approximately 60 to 80 minutes after the eviction process began.
Suspect Killed After Standoff
Following the initial shooting, Morales barricaded himself inside the home. After a nearly seven-hour standoff, Morales left the residence and was moving through nearby yards even as wearing tactical equipment and camouflage. A Kern County SWAT team then used a BearCat armored vehicle to approach Morales, who continued to fire upon them. Officers ultimately ran over Morales with the vehicle, resulting in his death.
Detective Remembered
Detective Hoppert served in the U.S. Navy from 2010 to 2015 and joined the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office on January 5, 2020. He is survived by his wife, who is four months pregnant, and his grandfather, who previously served as a Tulare County undersheriff.
Community Response
Several SWAT teams responded to the scene, and homes within a four-block radius were cleared as a precaution.
