Title: Texas High School Football Coaches Facing Lawsuit Over Extreme Workout
Subtitle: Mother of Student-Athlete Files Suit After 26 Players Hospitalized Due to Push-Up Punishment
In a shocking turn of events, a Texas mother has filed a lawsuit against a former high school football head coach and 12 other coaches, alleging their negligence resulted in serious injuries to 26 student-athletes. The incident occurred in January 2023 when the athletes were allegedly ordered to perform 400 push-ups within 60 minutes as punishment.
The lawsuit, filed on December 23, names former Rockwall-Heath High School football coach John Harrell among the defendants. The coaches are accused of indifference in their coaching, failing to intervene when players displayed symptoms of rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition that can cause kidney damage and even death.
Parents of the affected students allege that their children were forced to do 300-400 push-ups in an hour without breaks for drinking water. The push-up penalties were purportedly imposed for infractions such as improper uniform use, negative attitudes, or perceived lack of effort during practice.
According to the lawsuit, the coaches were aware of or should have been aware of the potential risks of such an intense punitive exercise but failed to act accordingly. Mike Sawicki, an attorney representing some of the parents, stated, "The problem here is that these are real, potentially life-altering injuries. These are injuries with potentially long-term effects, and this isn’t something that’s readily fixable."
Rhabdomyolysis, a condition caused by the breakdown of muscle tissue, can lead to the release of harmful toxins into the bloodstream that can damage the kidneys. Symptoms can include muscle swelling, weakness, pain, and dark or tea-colored urine. The condition can be triggered by excessive physical exertion, trauma, severe dehydration, certain medications, or other factors.
The legal complaint also accuses Harrell of not adequately supervising the athletes during the punishment, increasing the risk of injury.
This alarming incident serves as a harsh reminder of the importance of responsible coaching and the dangers of pushing student-athletes too far.
