Iceland, Finland, and Norway are emerging as the top destinations for “coolcations”—a growing travel trend where vacationers prioritize cooler climates to escape rising summer temperatures. According to the Summer Heat Escape Index by travel app Polarsteps, Iceland leads the rankings with a score of 83.81, driven by its low population density, legal wild camping, and mild August daytime temperatures averaging 10.7°C.
Why Are Travelers Choosing Coolcations?
The shift toward cooler destinations reflects a broader change in how travelers plan their summer holidays. Data from a Polarsteps survey conducted in April 2026 indicates that 35 per cent of British travelers opted for cooler climates this year. Of that group, more than one in five reported making the switch for the first time, signaling a departure from traditional sun-seeking tourism.
The Summer Heat Escape Index evaluates countries based on six specific criteria: August daytime temperatures, night-time temperatures, sea swimming conditions, forest coverage, population density, and access to wild camping.
Top-Ranked Destinations for Summer Escapes
Iceland secured the top spot on the index due to its volcanic landscapes and glacier lagoons. Beyond the scenery, the country offers practical benefits for heat-averse travelers, including August night-time temperatures averaging 8.1°C and sea temperatures near Akureyri hovering around 9.5°C.

Finland took second place, largely due to its vast natural environment. Nearly three quarters of the country is covered by forest. August daytime temperatures in Finland typically sit around 17°C, making it one of Europe’s strongest options for travellers looking for a cooler summer.
Norway rounded out the top three. The country is distinguished by some of the coldest sea swimming temperatures in Europe. Near Ny-Ålesund, August sea temperatures average just 5.3°C.
The Performance of the Baltic States
The Baltic region performed strongly, with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania all placing in the top 10 of the Polarsteps index.
If you are planning a trip to a coolcation destination, prioritize regions with high forest coverage.
