Dessen Kamera ermöglicht zugleich das Passthrough. Die zweite Gruppe nutzte mit Meta Quest 3 ein aktuelles und technisch deutlich fortschrittlicheres Mixed-Reality-Headset.

Negative Effekte bei beiden Geräten

Die Teilnehmer mussten mit aktiviertem Passthrough mehrere Aufgaben bewältigen, die Geh- und Orientierungsvermögen, Geschicklichkeit im Umgang mit Alltagsgegenständen sowie Körperkoordination und Gleichgewicht prüften. Die letzte Aufgabe war motorischen Tests aus Alkoholkontrollen nachempfunden: Die Teilnehmer sollten von einem Punkt aus Ferse an Zehe in gerader Linie zu einem Zielpunkt und wieder zurück gehen und anschließend 30 Sekunden lang auf einem Fuß balancieren.

Für die Auswertung wurden verschiedene Fragebögen, Selbstauskünfte sowie qualitative Erkenntnisse aus Beobachtungen und Interviews mit den Teilnehmern herangezogen. Die Forscher kamen zum Schluss, dass beide Passthrough-Geräte die Orientierung, das Wohlbefinden und die alltägliche Aufgabenbewältigung negativ beeinflussen. “Beide Systeme bleiben hinter dem Versprechen einer nahtlosen Interaktion und Integration der Realität zurück. Die Teilnehmer zeigten Symptome, die einer Alkoholisierung ähneln, darunter Koordinationsverlust, allgemeines Unwohlsein sowie Schwierigkeiten, den Fokus zu halten und sich zu konzentrieren”, schreiben die Forscher in ihrem Resümee.

Die Forscher betonen zudem, dass die Aufgaben einfach waren und in einer idealen Umgebung durchgeführt wurden. Damit blieben viele Herausforderungen außen vor, denen Nutzer in realen Szenarien begegnen könnten, etwa Treppen, unebenes Gelände, wechselnde Lichtverhältnisse oder Hindernisse auf Bodenhöhe.

Vor diesem Hintergrund überrascht es nicht, dass Meta und Apple empfehlen, ihre Mixed-Reality-Headsets nur in sicheren Umgebungen zu nutzen. In der Regel also zu Hause statt im Freien.

Das Sichtfeld beträgt nur 100 Grad und ist damit ungefähr halb so weit wie das natürliche menschliche Gesichtsfeld. Natürliches Fokussieren ist nicht möglich, und nimmt das Licht in der Umgebung ab, wirkt das Bild schnell körnig. Da die Außenkameras zudem nicht in Augenposition montiert werden können, müssen Algorithmen das Bild in Echtzeit nachkorrigieren, was zu hoher Latenz und Verzerrungen führen kann. Mixed-Reality-Headsets verschlechtern die menschliche Sicht also deutlich.

Langzeitfolgen sind unbekannt

Dieses Problem könnte sich in Zukunft abschwächen. Meta Quest 3 und Apple Vision Pro zählen zu den ersten Geräten, die Passthrough-Technik ernsthaft erproben. Bei künftigen Generationen werden Hard- und Software deutlich reifen und so die eine oder andere Einschränkung abmildern. Schon das Passthrough der Quest 3 ist heute dank Software-Updates deutlich besser als zur Markteinführung des Headsets.
