100 sporting moments | Wrestler Epp Mäe | Various

This year, on December 8, it will be 100 years since the Olympic movement in Estonia. On this occasion, the sports editor of the Estonian National Broadcasting Company selected the one hundred most important sports events and stories of the Estonian sports century. The main character of episode 86 is the fighter Epp Mäe, a strong woman who breaks opponents and thought patterns

The history of strong Estonian wrestlers begins with Georg Lurich, and the long list consists mainly of matmen. In 2015, however, Epp Mäe won bronze at the world heavyweight wrestling championships for women and with this result laid the foundation for her long run of medals. Which is equally important: she changed Estonians’ view of wrestling and top women’s sports.

For Mäe, a medal in a major competition is the rule rather than the exception. The long-awaited gold also arrived from the 2021 European Championships.

Like wrestling legend Lurich, Mäe also comes from Lääne-Virumaa. His hometown Tudu küla is located 50 kilometers from Lurich’s hometown Väike-Maarja.
Like Lurich, Epp Mäe’s personality and achievements are also an example for many.
