According to authorities, the actor was found unconscious in a car parked in one of Seoul’s largest parks on December 27, the BBC reports. It is not yet clear whether the actor took his own life, but police say they received information that Lee had left his home after writing a letter there.
The actor came to the attention of authorities in October when she was investigated over her alleged drug use.
Yonhap news agency reported that Lee Sun-kyun was suspected of using marijuana and ketamine at a bar in Seoul with the entertainment venue’s hostess. The actor said that although he accepted what the landlady offered, he was not aware that it was a prohibited substance. The landlady reportedly told authorities that Lee Sun-kyun repeatedly used drugs at his home, but the actor denied the allegations. Through his lawyer, he even asked for a lie detector test. However, the actor’s drug test results were negative or inconclusive.
Authorities expressed regret that Lee Sun-kyun died in the midst of the investigation, but added that the actor’s interrogation was conducted with his consent. In total, Lee Sun-kyun was interrogated three times, the last interrogation took place on Saturday and lasted 19 hours.
In a statement, the agency representing the actor expressed sadness over Lee Sun-kyun’s death and asked to refrain from spreading false facts based on speculation.
In Parasite, Lee Sun-kyun played the patriarch of the wealthy Park family. At the 2020 Oscars the film won four awards. Lee Sun-kyun was married to actress Jeon Hye-jin and they have two children together.
