The use of wood instead of wallpaper has moved from country houses to more modern city apartments. “The use of wooden slats in living rooms and bedrooms is particularly popular. Usually, a wall or some elements are covered with wooden material, but in very modern houses with modernist design from the 60s and 70s, even entire walls and ceilings are made of boards and fine wood,” said Mari-Liis Mihkelson, director of the Tartu department of Puumarket, the largest timber retailer in the Baltics.
“The main purpose of using wood is to make your home more interesting and warm. Wooden slats also improve the acoustics of the room by reducing echo and, together with the felt base, dampen sounds from other rooms. ribs are easy to install, often just glued to the wall,” Mihkelson said.
“On the wall and ceiling, in addition to the ribs, ordinary floor parquet and heat-treated wooden material, generally intended for use in saunas, are laid. The heat treatment highlights the beautiful pattern of the wood, but it must be taken into account that this type of material has a stronger odor than mature wood, which may not be suitable for everyone,” Mihkelson added.
According to the head of the Puumarket department, in addition to dark stained wood, gray, greenish and bluish shades are very popular in interior design. “Black and lighter shades are often combined as contrast,” Mihkelson said.
“Since wood prices have fallen significantly over the past year, it is used a lot in home repairs and renovations. In terms of volume, this year, for example, decking material was purchased by almost half compared to Last year, the sale of wood for interior finishing also increased by a third. In terms of price, the bottom line is probably now,” Mihkelson added.
