German production shows a larger decline than expected

German industrial production unexpectedly fell in November, further confirming the difficulties of the manufacturing sector of one of Europe’s largest economies. Production fell 0.7% compared to October. It was the sixth consecutive decline, although economists in a Bloomberg survey had expected a 0.3% increase.

According to Bloomberg, Germany is likely to end 2023 in recession, the first since the coronavirus pandemic. Manufacturers, the backbone of the German economy, are being hit by expensive energy prices, high interest rates and China’s slowdown.

At the time of writing the main European stock market indices are all in the red. The main index of the Spanish stock exchange IBEX 35 shows the largest decline (-1.97%). The main Italian stock exchange index FTSE MIB also fell (-0.66%).

On the American stock exchange, for example, the VIX (+2.68%) and oil (+2.05) are in green. The S&P 500 (-0.6%) and the Nasdaq (-0.6%) are in the red.
