A dream long range shot gave Tottenham the lead. Brentford have lost two captains – Soccernet.ee

Tottenham, who have put an unhappy period behind them over the last month, also continued successfully in the FA Cup, beating the penultimate Premier League team, Burnley, 1-0 at home.

It took Tottenham until the 78th minute to break Burnley’s defensive block, when Pedro Porro made the difference effectively. The Spanish right-back intercepted a pass from the opponent’s side of the field, rose to the edge of the penalty area and sent a powerful shot into the far corner.

Burnley, who spent most of the match in defence, managed to recover before the end and create subsequent chances in the extra minutes. In the eighth minute of extra time, goalkeeper Arijanet Muric headed from the corner of the opponent’s area towards Zeki Amdoun, but the Swiss failed to fire it between the posts from five metres. So the home team gets away with a clean back.

Having lost seven of their last eight Premier League games Brentford he found no relief for his injuries in the ten-man cup series Wolverhampton against. The match was sealed in the 8th minute by an unnecessary and dangerous foul by Joao Gomes against Christian Nörgaard, unintentional, but ending with a red card for Gomes and a substitution for Nörgaard.

Brentford dominated with numerical superiority and took the lead in the 41st minute when Neal Maupay smashed the ball into the net following a free kick. However, in the 64th minute, Wolves equalized with their first (and only) shot on target when Thomas Doyle’s powerful volley from twenty meters whistled under the crossbar.

Brentford soon received more bad news, because after Nörgaard’s injury, Mathias Jensen, who had attached the captain’s armband to his arm, had to pass it on as well. Another bomb thrown by Doyle hit him dangerously on the head and, although Jensen was up after some further treatment and appeared to be fine, there was no risk of him continuing.

The match ended in a draw, meaning Brentford, battered by injuries and suspensions, will face a replay at Wolverhampton. Thomas Frank’s team, however, will soon find vice-captain Ivan Toney, whose long suspension will end on January 17th.

Fulhamil there were no particular problems with the red light of the Championship Rotherhamiga. In the 24th minute, Rotherham lost the ball in a build-up phase and Bobby De Cordova-Reid, without thinking, sent the ball into the cross-corner from the bottom of the penalty area. Fulham couldn’t score any more goals, but the visitors couldn’t pose a threat either.

Fulham and Tottenham became just the first teams in the top 32, as Thursday’s only clash between Crystal Palace and Everton also required a replay. The remaining 28 matches of the third (opening) round will be played on Monday. Among others, Sunderland and Newcastle meet in the Tyne-Wear derby on Saturday and Arsenal host Liverpool on Sunday evening.
