Israeli forces invade southern Gaza

Israeli forces on Sunday entered the southern part of the Gaza Strip, where hundreds of thousands of people have fled to seek refuge from shelling and fierce clashes with the extremist group Hamas.

Humanitarian organizations describe the situation in Gaza as apocalyptic and warn of the spread of hunger and disease as well as military action.

Hamas, which governs Gaza, said on Sunday that Israel had carried out a series of very violent raids in the town of Khan Yunis in the southern part of the Strip and on the road from there to Rafah, on the border with Egypt.

A source close to the Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters told AFP that both were fighting fierce battles with Israeli forces in Khan Yunis on Sunday.

According to the Hamas Ministry of Health, at least 17,700 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the war with Israel broke out on October 7.

In northern Gaza, residents seek refuge in hospitals because there is no safe place left.

According to journalists, thousands of people have taken refuge in Al-Shifa hospital in the northern part of Gaza City. After the Israeli attack in November, the complex was partially destroyed and no longer functions as a hospital. In the courtyards and in the garden, hundreds of disused tents were pitched between the collapsed walls.

In Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip, 71 bodies were taken overnight to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital, health officials said on Saturday. In Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, 62 bodies arrived at Nasser Hospital.

Of the 2.4 million people in the Gaza Strip, 1.9 million have had to flee their homes.
