A new prosecutor’s office will deal with economic and corruption crimes

The future Prosecutor’s Office will have three departments: one will deal with crimes prosecuted by the Tax and Customs Commission, the second with corruption proceedings of the Central Criminal Police, the Defense Police and the Police and Border Guards, and the third department with economic crimes prosecuted by the police prefectures.

According to Justice Minister Kalle Laanet (RE), the main objectives of the amendment are to increase efficiency in the processing of economic and corruption crimes and to manage the resolution of criminal cases more effectively.

“The changed legal space and the emergence of new problems require a consolidated team approach. The creation of a new district prosecutor’s office makes it possible to form teams in the prosecution of economic and corruption crimes, to share specific professional experiences more systematically than before , to harmonize the practice and workload of prosecutors,” explained Laanet.

According to him, a center of expertise will be created in the field of criminal cases of economic crimes and corruption, which will allow prosecutors to focus on the most important issues in a situation where resources are limited.

Laanet noted that creating teams with closer cooperation than before allows prosecutors to more easily replace each other if necessary. This means that even in the event of staff movements or temporary absences from work, criminal cases can be transferred more easily than before.

There are great needs in dealing with large and complex economic and corruption cases, Laanet added. “They are also accompanied by a heavy workload, which constitutes favorable ground for the exhaustion of individual prosecutors and employees,” admitted Laanet, who said this could culminate in prosecutors and employees leaving their jobs for health reasons or of their own free will. . “Dividing work into teams and optimizing the use of resources helps manage and mitigate these risks.”

Before creating a new district attorney’s office, you must also change the attorney’s office statute. The government regulation will come into force on March 1, 2024, after which the district prosecutor’s office for economic and corruption crimes will also be able to begin operating.
