A sensational discovery by US scientists promises to ease the world’s dependence on lithium. How realistic is it?

This is what the academic Enn Lust says about the American discovery.

American scientists have developed a new method of producing batteries, thanks to which the use of lithium in batteries can be reduced by 70%. This became possible thanks to artificial intelligence and supercomputers. That’s what Microsoft and researchers at the US Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) discovered. Microsoft researchers used artificial intelligence and supercomputers to examine 32 million inorganic materials that could potentially be used to make batteries. Of these, 18 promising candidates were selected in less than a week. Finally, the researchers synthesized and tested a new material that combined lithium and sodium and found that its molecular structure facilitates the movement of ions. The material belongs to solid electrolytes. After its discovery, the new material was also used, for example, to power a light bulb. It took just under nine months to create a working prototype.
