A student from Pärnu took home the bronze medal from the International Science Olympiad

The Estonian representatives received a silver medal from the Gustav Adolfi Gymnasium and a student from the Royal School of Tallinn. In addition to a student from Mai School, Tallinn Real School and two students from Gustav Adolf Gymnasium won the bronze medal. The overall victory of the Olympics went to Taipei.

At the International Science Olympiad, students up to the age of 15 individually solve physics, chemistry and biology problems in two rounds of theory competitions. Additionally, there will be an experimental team round.

This year the competition was about sustainable agriculture and the food industry. In the theoretical phase, the contestants calculated the content of sulfur compounds in the fruits of durian growers and estimated the moments of force of the fruits hanging on the tree branch. During the experiment, the students determined the iron content of Thai jasmine rice using spectrophotometry and examined the plant preparations they had prepared under the microscope.

Between one intense round of competition and another, the cultural program included visits to the Royal Palace of Bangkok and the Wat Pho temple, the Muang Boran open-air museum and the local science museum. The closing ceremony of the competition was followed by a cultural evening with performances from Thailand and other participating countries.

Kaarel Kivisalu, Jörgen Metsik, Iris Merilo and Darja Lavõgina and Karl-Erik Volberg helped prepare the contestants among the jury members of the Estonian Science Olympiad. On site Hanna-Riia Allas and Säde Jakobson translated the tasks for the team.

The preparation and participation of Estonian students in international competitions is organized by the School of Science of the University of Tartu. The initiative was financially supported by the Ministry of Education and Science.
