According to the Kremlin, the accession of Ukraine and Moldova could destabilize the EU

“Negotiations for accession to the EU can last years or decades. The EU has always had strict accession criteria and it is obvious that neither Ukraine nor Moldova meets these criteria at the moment,” the Kremlin spokesperson said Dmitry Peskov.

According to him, it is “an absolutely politicized decision, the desire of the European Union to support these countries”. He added that “these new members can destabilize the EU” and noted that “since we live on the same continent as the EU, we obviously observe the situation closely”.

At Thursday’s meeting, European leaders’ discussions on Ukraine’s accession negotiations had reached an impasse when the German chancellor suggested that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán go for a coffee outside the room. Orbán left, which led to the decision to start accession negotiations, Politico reports.

“Waiting for someone to go out for a coffee to make a decision in their absence – if it were true, this would be a unique practice,” Peskov said.

However, due to the conflict with Hungary, no agreement on a 50 billion euro financial aid package for Ukraine was reached at the meeting.

“Hungary has its own interests. And unlike many other EU countries, Hungary firmly defends its interests, which impresses us,” Peskov said.
