The US Department of Defense announced that today, Sunday 3 December, the US warship USS Carney and several merchant ships were attacked in the Red Sea.

This was reported, among others, by the AP news agency. According to AP, the Defense Ministry did not say where the attack was aimed. There was also no information on damage to ships or human injuries.

“We are aware of the attacks on the USS Carney and merchant vessels in the Red Sea and will provide additional information at a later date,” the Defense Department told the AP.

According to the AP, Yemen’s Houthi rebels said they had attacked two merchant ships that they said belonged to Israel. According to AP, the Houthis did not acknowledge the attack on the USS Carney.

A U.S. official told ABC News that the USS Carney had been the target of several Houthi attacks and that in at least two cases the American ship had successfully shot down drones.

According to the Reuters news agency, a Houthi representative said their navy hit two Israeli ships Unity Explorer and Number Nine with an attack drone and a maritime missile.

According to the spokesperson, two Israeli ships were targeted because they did not heed warnings. He did not specify in his statement what the warnings were.

According to the spokesperson, the attacks were a response “to the demands of the Yemeni people and to the appeal of Islamic nations to stand with the Palestinians.”

The Israeli army has not yet commented on the incident.

The Houthis are an influential Shia guerrilla group in northern Yemen.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile carrier USS Carney was commissioned in April 1996.
