An energy expert explains: why is it worth fixing the short-term price now?

According to Tohver, there are many customers whose electricity package is expiring for two reasons. First, many customers have decided to fix the price of electricity for a year in light of the high prices caused by last winter and the energy crisis. Secondly, low summer electricity prices and favorable market forecasts have made it possible to offer customers convenient six-monthly electricity packages, which are now about to expire.

“The beginning of the year has once again shown that users of the electricity package on the exchange must be prepared for very high price spikes. Now, when more families have to make a decision on the choice of electricity package for the next period, it would be It makes sense to review your electricity consumption and decide whether exchange or fixed-price electricity would be more useful,” explains Tohver. “For example, among Enefit’s private customers, almost 70% of consumers have a fixed-price package.”

Enefit’s Estonian market manager added that in the long term it makes sense for supporters of both metering and fixed packages to choose renewable energy. “Choosing the green electricity package allows us to accelerate investments in the development of renewable energy production and therefore increase the entry of renewable energy into the market,” explained Tohver. “The more electricity we can produce from renewable energy sources, the faster electricity prices will fall and customers will be able to get cheaper packages in the future.”

This is exactly what has happened recently: more and more electricity is produced from renewable sources, and green energy has therefore also become more accessible to many customers. On the Enefit website you can compare the price of all standard electricity packages with those based on 100% renewable energy or green packages. “From this you can see that the price differences between conventional and green electricity are small. So now is a good opportunity to take a step forward on the green road towards a more sustainable future,” Tohver said. “Every person can contribute by choosing green, 100% renewable energy instead of a standard electricity package.”

How to decide how long to stipulate an electricity contract?

“We have seen that electricity prices are lowest in late spring and summer, and during these periods it is possible to offer customers fixed packages at a more affordable price,” explained Santa Tohver. “Therefore, the best choice may be to fix the electricity package for a short period of time, i.e. for six months, so that longer pricing decisions can be made, if desired during the lowest summer prices. ”
