According to Ansip there are many strong people in the Reform Party who could all run for party leadership, ERR broadcasts his interview on Vikerraadio. “Obviously this change of coach has to be done sooner or later. I think sooner rather than later”, he said.
According to him, Kallas’ resignation is up to the council of the Reform Party, but Ansip admitted that the prime minister’s fiduciary credit has disappeared.
“The reason for this is not only the Russian economic scandal, but a more general attitude and way of doing politics. They have disappointed the people, and the question is no longer just about 15% support for the Reform Party, but whether the 70% of the Estonian people want the resignation of the prime minister, this is a very strong signal. And if the government’s support is only 33%, this must be considered a threat to the security of the Estonian state. If we are in grave danger and the trust in state leaders is so low, it is dangerous for the Estonian state,” Ansip said.
He has already criticized Kaja Kalla. In October she told ERR that Kallas’ explanations about her husband’s Russia-related activities didn’t seem very true. Ansip invited journalists to ask Kallas for clearer answers on this topic.
He added that he would like to listen to discussions on Europe, but unfortunately talking about domestic politics gives more space.
In November, the general assembly of the Reform Party took place, where Kaja Kallas was again elected party leader. She was a solo candidate.
The results show that support for Kallas in the Squirrel Party is starting to crumble: Kallas garnered 636 votes in the party leader election. Nearly 400 Reform Party members who participated in the elections did not vote for him.
