Anyone can now rent ransomware

Ransomware as a Service, or RaaS, or ransomware as a service, is the latest business model in the world of cybercrime, writes The Hacker News. Like other services, inexperienced characters can now start extorting themselves without knowing anything about the technical details of this field. Instead of creating and distributing your own ransomware, you are given the option to pay a service fee, select a suitable target and launch an attack using the service provider’s special tools.

This model significantly reduces the time and cost of a ransomware attack, with the average time between a ransomware attack and file encryption falling below 24 hours for the first time, the study shows.

One such service that has already caused a lot of problems is PlayCrypt (or Play), which is discussed in more depth on the Adlumin blog.

The Play ransomware, for example, has been the subject of serious attacks against companies and government bodies around the world since its first detection in 2022. Making it available to everyone, both serious hackers and young people who want to do something, has the volume of successful attacks increased significantly.

Rent-as-a-service ransomware is gaining momentum because its developers and vendors are interested in new customers and successful attacks. These are no longer ready-made scribbled code, but professional developers who have built their profitable business on ransomware.

“The main finding this year is that the RaaS business model represents another win for the bad guys. Profit sharing and risk mitigation are the best ways to ensure the success of a ransomware service,” he said Muhi Majzoub, Product Manager at Opentext, in a recent press release detailing some of the worst common cyber attacks in recent times.
