The American metropolis is taking tough measures to deal with rising crime. The alarm has been raised as the number of serious crimes on the metro transport network shot up by 50% in January 2024, compared to the same month in 2023. This February, metro crimes increased by 15% compared to previous year.
For his part, the mayor of New York, Democrat Eric Adams, a former police chief who was elected in 2021 on the promise of restoring safety to the city after the Covid pandemic, also announced the strengthening of these controls. However, he himself, trying to appear reassuring, noted that the New York subway is one of the safest networks in the world, with six criminal acts per day – mainly thefts – while receiving four million passengers daily. Passenger rights groups argue, however, that the troop deployment may have the opposite effect, giving the impression of widespread crime on the subway.
The deployment of nearly 750 National Guard troops will be aimed at assisting the NYPD to step up checks on passengers’ bags at the busiest stations. Another 250 police officers will reinforce the project in the means of transport. Attacks seem to be increasing in recent months.

That same month, a subway driver was attacked with a knife at a Brooklyn station.
