Arteta on Arsenal’s defeat: It was our worst game of the season | Soccer

Arsenal, who were top of the English Premier League table at Christmas, have taken just one point from their last three games and dropped to fourth place.

On the final day of the year, Bukayo Saka’s 5th-minute goal gave Arsenal the lead at Fulham, but Raul Jimenez’s 29th-minute goal and Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s 60th-minute goal gave the hosts home victory 2-1.

Fulham ended a run of three consecutive defeats with the victory, while Arsenal now have just one point from their last three games. Arsenal are in fourth place in the standings with 40 points, Liverpool and Aston Villa have two points more.

“A painful, sad day. We simply weren’t good enough,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said after the defeat. “What happened today must not happen again. Because if it happens again, we will never have a chance to get what we want. It was our worst game of the season. It would have been a great way to end the year leader of the standings, but these are the differences,” added the Spaniard.

In the second match on Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur achieved a 3:1 victory over Bournemouth at home, Pape Matar Sarr, Son Heung-Min and Richarlison scored. Tottenham have picked up one point less than rivals Arsenal and are fifth in the table behind them.
