BACK ROOM | Marriage equality came in secret, like a wave. From Monday gays and lesbians will be able to get married

Same-sex marriage has not been a topic in the mainstream media and in the Riigikogu election campaign in general. No matter how you evaluate the importance of the issue, the focus is still on what is really at stake. In the heat of the election, it didn’t look like marriage equality would become a serious decision point for the next governing coalition. Marriage equality was realistically supported by two of the smallest parties that entered the National Assembly: Sots and Eesti 200. There was no chance of them getting a majority out of two. The Reform Party used to be known as a broadly liberal party, but for more than 15 years it has been a popular party trying to win as many votes as possible while maintaining a general liberal ideological line. With this approach, it would be better if the electoral program did not present “sharp corners” that could affect the more conservative part of the squirrel electoral base. Young reformers supported marriage equality, but the electoral program limited their support to the adoption of acts implementing the law on cohabitation.
