As long as France rejects the treaty, it will not come into force anyway…
We must get away from this hypocrisy. Aiming for a massively export-oriented agriculture is a mistake. We will not resist, as Wallonia, Belgium, Europe, the practices of other countries. The balance must above all be achieved on an internal market. This is why price controls are necessary. The Minister of the Economy, Pierre-Yves Dermagne (PS) must take up the matter. Not only with a price observatory, but also with restrictive measures. There must be a minimum purchase price imposed on the entire chain of processors, including supermarkets, in order to guarantee a minimum price for farmers. Farmers are right to block supermarkets, which compete with each other. It’s unbearable to see something we produced being sold 5 or 6 times more expensive in a supermarket.
What is, concretely, Belgium’s position regarding Mercosur?
There is a porosity to the arguments used by the extreme right in France, and by populists. We want to help farmers to change agricultural practices, support the organic sector and reduce the use of products that are dangerous for the environment and health. This calls into question practices. But there is also a form of propaganda of which they are the target. There is generally a discourse from the MR and other very conservative people, who point the finger at alternative truths, bullshit. But farmers are not fooled.

Let’s be careful. The French position will no longer necessarily be the same after the European elections.

The text is unamendable! Belgium must have the courage to say it. And this, without waiting for the elections. We must give this signal to farmers. They understand that accepting massive imports of agricultural products that do not meet our social and environmental standards is untenable. The position of the Greens is very clear: stop Mercosur.
David Clarinval pleads for mirror clauses on Mercosur. He therefore wants to amend it.
Alexander De Croo’s position basically consists of saying that the Flemish government will never agree to reject Mercosur. I was very surprised that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture did not take a more offensive position after their meeting this week. The agricultural sector was rightfully disappointed with this position.
