Originally, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Ussõk were supposed to meet on December 23. This duel was supposed to determine the overall heavyweight champion. In reality, however, this match has been postponed to February 17th. In the main match of the evening, the Englishman Anthony Joshua and the Swede Otto Wallin will enter the ring. Joshua is a former WBA, WBO and IBF champion who lost his championship belt to Ussõ.
The 34-year-old Joshua has 26 wins and three losses as a professional. Joshua has won 23 by knockout. The 33-year-old Wallin has recorded 26 wins (14 by knockout) and one defeat.
Wallin’s only defeat came in 2019, when he lost by decision to Tyson Fury. At the same time, Fury received 47 stitches after the victory.
In the second most important match of the evening, 38-year-old Deontay Wilder, former WBC champion, will enter the ring. He lost the championship belt to Fury. Wilder’s opponent is Joseph Parker, the 2016-2018 title holder. until the year WBO championship belt. Wilder has 43 wins (42 by KO), one draw and two losses. The 31-year-old Parker meanwhile has 33 wins and three losses.
It was initially hoped that former world champions Wilder and Joshua would face each other, but this deal did not materialise. There was reportedly €50 million on the table for both of them, but it still came to nothing. Now they are satisfied with about half of the royalties. “Boxing fans have been waiting for this fight for years. Now the only obstacle is December 23,” Wilder promised on Instagram that the big duel will take place in 2024.
“If they (Joshua and Wilder) both win, then they will face each other. This is the current situation. The winner of the fight will probably be able to defeat the winner of the Fury-Ussyk match. So the stakes are very high,” said the Fury promoter Frank Warren.
Daniel Dubois and Jarrell Miller will also face each other that same evening in Riyadh. Dubois had a chance against Ussõk in the summer, but ended up losing by knockout in the ninth round. Miller, who served his sentence for doping, has never felt the bitterness of defeat as a professional. Additionally, the WBA light heavyweight championship belt is also up for grabs.
