Tampered Gift Cards: A Con That’s Draining Thousands of Dollars from Consumers
Two individuals have been arrested in Plano, Texas, for their alleged involvement in a gift card draining scheme that has put consumers across North Texas at risk. The Plano Police Department announced last week that Xiaohong Zhang and Xiongling Chen, both residents of California, were arrested in connection to the scam.
“Gift card draining” is a con where scammers retrieve unpurchased gift cards from kiosks and record the card numbers and PIN codes. They then reseal the cards with tamper-proof seals and place them back on shelves for unsuspecting customers to purchase. When someone uses one of these tampered cards to make a purchase, all the money on it is drained by the scammer.
