Today’s stock markets, April 25th. The US economy slows down, inflation does not: the markets see the rate cuts moving away. Meta also weighs on the exchanges

MILANO – American GDP slows down in the first quarter of the year, stopping at +1.6% from the +3.4% confirmed for the fourth quarter of 2024 and well below consensus expectations which were around 2.4-2.5 %. On the other hand, however, the PCE inflation data increased in the first quarter of 2024 at an annualized rate of 3.4% and the ‘core’ data, the one adjusted for energy and food prices, grew by 3. 7%, against expectations for a figure of 3.4%. Tomorrow the price data for personal expenses will arrive, the one the Fed is looking at most carefully, meanwhile the signals have significantly slowed down Wall Street and closing Europe in the red. According to investors, the prospect of a reduction in the cost of money is still receding: a cut will not occur before December, indicates the trend of swaps which record the economic slowdown in the presence of persistent inflation.

In the first part of the day, Meta’s quarterly report dictated the pace of the markets. We had this round of quarterly accounts like the one where The markets want to see the results of Big Tech’s investments in AIand from this point of view Facebook’s earnings report is worrying. Weaker-than-expected sales in the current quarter and higher capital spending are the mix the market doesn’t like. TO disappointing is the forecast of revenues between 36.5 and 39 billion dollars, with the midpoint of the range slightly below the consensus $38.2 billion. “Even if Meta will employ artificial intelligence, at the moment it does not seem to be the greatest beneficiary of its adoption”, he summarized at the Bloomberg Jack Ablin, chief investment officer di Cresset Wealth Advisors.

Reasoning that has already made itself felt in Asia with Tokyo down sharply after three positive sessions (-2.1%). Yen under special observation while awaiting BoJ moves, at its lowest since 1990. He is expected in the afternoon the American GDP, also in this case closely watched by the Federal Reserve (which awaits PCE inflation data tomorrow) to guide its next rate choices. Meanwhile from ECB bulletin the prediction emerges “that inflation will fluctuate around current levels, then decline to reach the 2 percent target next year”. The Eurotower will keep “rates restrictive as long as necessary” with a “data-driven approach”, reiterating that it will “not follow a fixed path of reduction” in the cost of money that the market expects from June. From the tensions in the Middle East, the bulletin warns, and from the dynamics of wages, risks for inflation remain, but the pressures should ease.

On Piazza Affari, among others, the accounts of Stmicroelectronics which saw net profit halve in the quarter and lowered its annual revenue and margin estimates.

EU stock markets end sharply lower

European stock markets closed sharply lower, although they recovered ground compared to the lows reached in the afternoon, in the wake of the negative trend on Wall Street. Paris closed down by 0.93%, Frankfurt by 0.95% and Madrid by 0.48% while London finished higher (+0.48%) thanks to the boost from mining stocks, after BHP’s offer for Anglo American. The American GDP, which grew less than expected, and the PCE deflator, an indicator of the trend of goods and services purchased by American consumers, which grew beyond expectations, weighed on the price lists. A mix of factors that has fueled investors’ concern that the US economy may be entering a period of stagflation.

For the moment, municipalities must welcome third-country nationals again

Outgoing State Secretary Eric van der Burg for Asylum and Migration

For the time being, municipalities must continue to welcome so-called third-country nationals and guarantee them the same rights as other refugees from Ukraine. This is what the outgoing Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Van der Burg writes in a letter addressed to the House of Representatives.

Van der Burg says he is forced to make this decision because the Council of State has referred questions about the matter to the Court of Justice of the European Union. The highest administrative court said today by the European Court to find out when the right of residence of third-country nationals expires. Until a response is received, ongoing proceedings at the State Council are suspended.

Third-country nationals are people who do not have Ukrainian nationality but who have obtained asylum or a permanent residence permit in Ukraine. According to Van der Burg, the renewed reception of this group of refugees will last at least until the European Court has provided an answer. It is not known when this will happen.

“For now let’s clarify”

The Secretary of State informed the municipalities of the decision. Due to ongoing legal procedures, many municipalities no longer knew exactly what to do. Some municipalities stopped welcoming third-country nation
