Excitement Surrounds Reopening of Dutch Girl Donuts
Woodward Avenue is buzzing with anticipation for the grand reopening of the cherished Dutch Girl Donuts.
A week ago, a subtle hint of the imminent reopening was dropped through an Instagram post mentioning “test batches.”
The post showcased a picture of Cecelia Timmer, known as the “Dutch Girl,” who, along with her husband John, established the doughnut shop in 1947 when she was just 26 years old.
Reviving a Legacy
Over 75 years later, the iconic Dutch Girl Donuts with its unmistakable blue awning and signage on Woodward Avenue remains a symbol of tradition and is gearing up for a grand reopening under the stewardship of prominent Detroiter, Paddy Lynch.
The establishment had closed its doors in early September 2021 following the passing of owner Gene Timmer a few weeks later.
A New Chapter
“Witnessing the revival of something beloved for generations is truly heartwarming,” Lynch expressed as patrons flocked to the shop. “I believe every Detroiter was eager to see Dutch Girl back in action.”
Lynch, a third-generation funeral director residing in Detroit’s Arden Park, also owns Detroit’s historic bathhouse, The Schvitz.
Community Support
Passersby on Friday were treated to complimentary samples of freshly baked test batches of various doughnuts, including yeasty glazed, twists, and jelly-filled delights, some adorned with powdered sugar.
Lynch emphasized the overwhelming support from the community in Dutch Girl’s revival, making the endeavor all the more gratifying and exciting for everyone involved.
Renovation and Restoration
After months of speculation, Lynch officially acquired the business and building from the Timmer family in November 2023, commencing renovations earlier this year.
“We took the opportunity to upgrade nearly all equipment while preserving the original charm of the place, refurbishing the terrazzo floors, installing new lighting, and giving the entire space a fresh coat of paint,” Lynch shared.
