Apple held an event at Battersea Power Station in London, UK
On May 7, Apple held a new product launch event in London, England, and other locations. As you may already know from the news, what was announced was a new group of iPad products.
There was a hands-on session after the presentation, so let me give you a quick update on how it went.
Tandem OLED is not just about high image quality.
Let’s start with the iPad Pro.
The big difference is the display.
While the existing model was a mini LED, the new product is an organic EL (OLED). This is also an “OLED tandem” which uses two OLED panels. It goes without saying that the blacks are clearly black, but the brightness gain is also very sharp. I wasn’t able to compare it side by side with the old model, but the difference can be seen at a glance. I think you can see the situation even in the photo.
The reason I layered two layers was to increase the brightness. A dedicated controller with integrated processor, M4, distributes the amount of light emitted between the two OLED panels, increasing brightness in areas requiring increased brightness.
In addition, by dividing the light-emitting part between two OLEDs, the brightness load per OLED will also be reduced. It also seems to have the effect of reducing what we call “burn-in”.
This time, for the high-end models with 1 TB and 2 TB of storage, in addition to the usual anti-reflective treatment, you can choose “nano-textured glass”.
In a place where light is not reflected, I asked myself: “Is there really such a difference?” “, but when I deliberately tried to reflect the light, the difference became obvious.
The iPad Pro on the left only has the usual reflective coating. Although the reflections are somewhat suppressed, the reflections are clearly visible.
In the same situation, the model on the right is equipped with “nano-textured glass”. There is a vague white area to the left of center, but it is much less visible than the highlight reflection in the previous photo.
When I look at this, I think, “That’s nice…”, but given that the storage has to be a 1TB or 2TB model, and there is an additional cost to choose the nano-textured glass, the price difference is quite big. Put it away.
Nano-textured glass is particularly useful not only when you want to reduce reflections, but also when you want to achieve more accurate color matching in environments where you already use an external display of this type. Micromachining reduces glare, so it’s best to wipe greasy dirt off your hands frequently. However, even if you rub it with the Apple Pencil, it will not be scratched and the nano-texture will not be damaged. However, you should be careful if you apply film to nano-textured glass, as it will be affected by the adhesive and become damaged.
As with the nano-textured glass, the functions are different between the 1TB/2TB model and the 256GB/512GB model.
The two lower models have three high-performance CPU cores and 8 GB of main memory, while the 1 TB and 2 TB models have four high-performance cores and 16 GB of main memory. However, there is no difference in terms of GPU performance, memory, storage bandwidth, etc. This is something you should pay attention to when choosing nano-textured glass.
Thinness and lightness are further increased when combined with a keyboard
The lightness and thinness are also different.
In terms of specifications, the 13-inch version is significantly lighter. It’s almost 100g lighter than the 12.9-inch version, which you’ll notice as soon as you hold it.
Even though the 13-inch model, which has a larger surface area, is relatively thinner and lighter, people who use the iPad Pro on a daily basis may find that it is “quite different” (1.3 mm for the iPad Pro model). 13 inches, 11 mm for the 13 inch model (0.6 mm in inches).
On the other hand, when it comes to the 11-inch versions, the difference is only around 20g. However, of course I can understand it being “lighter” and “thinner”.
In addition to this, there are other circumstances regarding the 13-inch version.
Even with two OLEDs, it’s still thinner and lighter than the mini LED LCD used in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. As a result, the 13-inch version became a “more noticeably lighter and thinner model than the 11-inch version.”
The OLED tandem is controlled by a dedicated core within the M4, and the M4 itself has a structure with fewer air gaps thanks to reduced power efficiency and heat dissipation design.
However, when it comes to “light” and “thin”, the Magic Keyboard for the new iPad Pro makes a big impact.
Apple’s public information doesn’t include the weight of the Magic Keyboard, so we don’t know the exact numbers here either. However, when you hold it, you notice that it is considerably lighter.
In other words, the weight when holding the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard together changes even more dramatically with the new model. Those who are considering replacing the product should look forward to this point.
Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro has some pretty big changes. The palm rest, which was previously made of plastic and surface-treated, is now made of aluminum, a function key has been added to the key layout and the touchpad is also larger and made of glass. In short, it became more “Mac”. This development is as positive as the changes made to the iPad Pro itself.

For example, if you change the direction of the pen, the brush shape and stroke will change accordingly. This is an operation called “squeezing” which uses the detection results of a motion sensor. It is suitable for drawing by changing the width while laying down the brush, or for processing by pinching part of the image.
Twisting the Apple Pencil Pro changes the shape of the strokes.
The vibration feedback also lets you know when to call up a menu, change pen modes, step-by-step cancel, etc., and it’s pretty easy to understand, too.
I thought it would take some time to get used to using it, but for artists who use Apple Pencil to draw illustrations and manga, it’s more than just a stylus.
