California’s Public Utilities Commission has approved a new electricity plan that will fundamentally change how electricity is billed by adding a mandatory $24.15 fixed fee each month. The plan aims to encourage more people to switch to electric cars and replace gas appliances in their homes, thereby reducing the use of planet-warming fossil fuels.

While the three largest utilities in the state support this proposal, there are concerns from consumer groups and lawmakers who believe that millions of Californians living in small homes and apartments who are low users of electricity will subsidize households that are heavy power users.

In addition, this new fixed fee could have larger consequences for working-class families and apartment renters who use less energy each month. According to Flagstaff Research, about 4 million households cou

There was great surprise when CBS recently reported that Friesland has gained 15 square kilometers of agricultural land in the past ten years and lost 44 square kilometers of nature. That is approximately twice the area of the island of Schiermonnikoog.

I don’t understand any of it

“I don’t understand anything about it,” says director Albert van der Ploeg of BoerenNatuur Fryslân, the association of agricultural collectives that stands up for the interests of nature farmers. “I wouldn’t know where nature has disappeared for agricultural land.”

Van der Ploeg emphasizes that in recent years there has been more agricultural nature management on agricultural land where farmers maintain landscape elements such as tree banks or ditches. “Ek is more private after all, not farmers.”

Ecologist and deputy director Chris Bakker of It Fryske Gea also finds the development outlined by the CBS stra

In a report on poverty dated April, the World Bank attributes this situation to “chronic underinvestment” by successive governments. This neglect has caused the region to lag significantly behind the rest of the country, according to the financial institution. However, other factors also contributed to this situation.

Controversial Baidu PR Chief Steps Down Amid Backlash Over Workplace Culture

Hong Kong, CNN –

The PR chief of Baidu who recently stirred up controversy by endorsing a tough workplace culture has resigned from the Chinese search engine, a source familiar with the matter revealed to CNN on condition of anonymity. The departure of Qu Jing, former Vice President and Head of Communications, has been confirmed through an internal personnel system screenshot. Baidu has not immediately responded to CNN’s request for comment. The controversy arises from a series of videos Qu posted on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, about her strict management style and demanding expectations on her subordinates.

In one of the videos, Qu responded angrily to an employee’s refusal to go on a 50-day business trip during the Covid-19 pandemic and questioned why she should consider the employee’s personal matters. Qu, who has two children of her own, defended her approach by dismissing the employee’s concerns.

Qu’s remarks fueled outrage among young Chinese professionals who are increasingly critical of the intense work culture prevalent in many industries. This backlash follows a similar incident involving Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma, who faced criticism in 2019 for endorsing the “996” trend, which refers to working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week.
