CLYDE KULL ⟩ Major world elections are just around the corner. Is there a way out of the climate policy stalemate?

As the dust settles from the recently concluded COP28 climate conference in Dubai, we are faced with a sobering reality. Over the next 12 months, the legalistic niceties of environmental diplomacy will be replaced by much tougher political maneuvers that will absorb much of the world’s attention. There is no doubt that climate issues will rise to the forefront of election platforms in 2024.

Next year, voters will go to the polls in countries with more than 40% of the world’s population and about the same share of emissions. In some countries, the opportunity to break out of the climate and energy policy stalemate is emerging. In others, however, climate policy could prove counterproductive. Unfortunately, there are not many countries that have a serious chance of accelerating the transition to clean energy in the way desired by the COP28 agreement. Below is an overview of some of the most important upcoming elections.
