Coe wants to change jumping area: we spend too much time raking the sandpit | Athletics

According to Sebastian Coe, president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (WA), long and triple jumps need improvement to maintain spectator interest in the near future.

The last year of athletics has offered many wonderful results, for example, Armand Duplantis once again broke the pole vault world record twice and Kelvin Kiptum took the men’s marathon world record by just 35 seconds from the mythical threshold of two hours in October.

“I cannot remember a season that has offered so many high-level results in different athletics disciplines as this one. I think the World Championships in Budapest were the best ever and seven world records were set in one brilliant season” , Coe told reporters. on Monday.

In recent years, several streaming platforms have found success with different sports series, such as Formula 1 “Drive to Survive”, tennis “Break Point”, football “All or Nothing”, etc. A similarly structured series focusing on sprint stars from the United States, Britain, Italy, Ivory Coast and Jamaica will be released on Netflix next year. Among others, Noah Lyles, Dina Asher-Smith, etc. they play an important role in the series. However, Coe underlined that, in his opinion, horizontal jumps, i.e. long and triple jumps, require a “push”.

“We did a lot of research at the World Cup, we tested our fans both in the stadium and in front of the TV, and we also had heart rate monitors, so we know what interests them and what leaves them cold,” Coe said. “About 30-40% of long jump and triple jump attempts are not measured. That’s a lot: it means we spend a lot of time raking the sandbox. Our question is: how can we reduce that time?” the WA president added.
