An extraordinary amount of excellent crime literature has been published in the vernacular this year, and the period before Christmas brings more and more of it. So you’d think it would be easy to find a gift for a crime fan. But it isn’t, unless Santa Claus is the prince of Saudi Arabia, who owns a desert full of oil wells and rakes in money with a rake. It is extremely difficult to choose the right one, because one prefers tangerines, so to speak, another avocados, but the third is allergic to fruit and would absolutely like a smoked koto. To ease Santa’s headache, we publish here a guide to recently published crime novels that have a seal of quality and deserve to be put in a gift bag.
