Did you know that smoke detectors expire? When was the last time you checked the sensor?

And as if this were not enough, it is estimated that almost half of smoke detectors have exceeded their lifespan and should be immediately replaced with new ones, because they have been in the ceilings of houses since 2009, when the detector became mandatory, that is, they are 14 years have passed since then, but the lifespan of a detector is usually three to ten years.

In addition to monitoring the life of the smoke detector, it requires regular maintenance like any electronic device. But just checking the beeper and changing the batteries is not enough. Eveli Hunt, Nublu service manager, explains how to properly maintain and check the sensor.

“An outdated sensor must be replaced immediately, because the smoke-reactive sensors within the sensor may have lost their sensitivity over time and an outdated sensor may no longer report correctly in the event of an accident,” Hunt points out and says that the sensors obsolete ones are still used unknowingly in some homes.

A common tip is to occasionally press the smoke alarm button and see if it beeps. The recommendation is very correct, but many do not know that it alone is not sufficient to verify the operating status of the smoke detector.

The beep after pressing the test button only indicates that the sensor battery and audio system are working properly. However, this does not indicate the reliability of the sensor. “If the sensor works, you can check it with a special test aerosol,” teaches the specialist.

Installation with double-sided tape: yes or no?

Another mistake Estonians make with a smoke detector is related to its installation. “The sensor is attached to the ceiling with double-sided tape. However, it generally cannot support the weight of the smoke detector. Furthermore, in the event of a fire, the room temperature rises and the tape-attached detector can fall and stop beeping ,” explains Hunt and points out that the smoke detector must be secured with screws.
