don’t throw away old photos, take them…

“You might wonder who would need old photos with strangers on them, but in reality they are stolen. My grandparents’ albums were attached to us from our childhood home,” writes the tartan woman in the Võrumaa Museum post Sõprade published in the group “Notited: Tartus”.

Although most people want to get rid of photos taken decades ago that depict strangers and often throw them away, it is worth offering the photos to museums in your city.

The Friends of Võrumaa Museum will gladly accept old photos. “As our name says Võrumaa Sõprade Muuseum, which is part of the NGO Võrumaa Sõprade Selts, we are mainly interested in photos of Võrumaa (Old Võromaa) and quite unlimited ones. Also interesting are the ancient views of southern Estonia, indeed even the ancient views of Estonia,” says the museum representative Janno Kuus Elu24-le.

“Our wish would actually be that none of the old photos end up in the garbage and even less in the oven. In fact, even in group photos, everyone has their own people around them. Estonia is small, you know a lot of people around, everyone is tied to someone in one way or another.”

Kuus says there are some groups on Facebook, the largest of which is Estonian Old Photos, which have generated great interest among people. There is also a local Old Võrumaa old photo group where all kinds of photos are shared.

“We have already made some phone calls and some feedback also came in the form of photos. Actually there are many museums throughout Estonia that would be happy to enrich their collections in the form of different photos,” says Kuus. “We heard at least once a month that old photos end up in the oven or in the garbage. It really hurts. Of course, this is often unavoidable. People move, you can’t always take everything with you. People get older, they feel lonely , they simply have nowhere to leave their photos and at the same time they don’t want them to be left lying around. Therefore, there is no safe alternative where to put the photos. At this point it should be noted that there are many museums and archives where you can leave your historic photos for future generations to see,” he says.
