Pauliina Palttala, communications specialist at Finnair, tells Iltallehti that such an incident has indeed happened. She adds that Finnair does not comment on the reasons behind the situation in an individual case. Due to the extra stopover, the plane arrived in Kuusamo later than expected.
According to the police in Eastern Finland, the man on board the flight had not obeyed instructions given by the staff and had started behaving aggressively towards the staff. According to the police, the man had threatened the staff, but there was no case of violence.
To defuse the situation, the pilot decided to make a stopover at Kuopio airport, where the police took the passenger who had threatened off the plane.
Police in eastern Finland say they will be able to comment more precisely on the case once all parties have had their say. As of Wednesday morning, police had not yet spoken to the plane’s staff.
Palttala says there are sometimes situations where a pilot has to stop due to a disruptive passenger, but stresses that these are generally still isolated cases.
According to Palttala, safety is of utmost importance on board the aircraft and the aircraft staff are trained to deal with various issues.
“In such disturbing situations, the situation and further actions are always assessed on a case-by-case basis,” he says.
