Swedish cross-country skier Ebba Andersson has decided to leave this year’s Tour de Ski after three races.

After a positive start to the season, Andersson was considered the main favorite in ski mountaineering, but around Christmas he was infected with the corona virus, which sapped him of strength.

The 26-year-old Swede still made it to the start of the Tour de Ski, but in the first three stages of Dobbiaco she never managed to enter the top ten.

She trails overall leader Jessie Diggins (USA) by more than two minutes before the ski tour resumes in Davos on Wednesday, and remains in 14th place overall.

“I’m not here to compete at a mediocre level,” Andersson told reporters Tuesday. “This [Tour de Ski] so far it hasn’t been a disaster, but I’m a little afraid of the possible consequences. What you need to recover after the tour.”

Andersson made the decision on Tuesday morning after training. “I had confirmation on the track that yesterday’s race was more exciting than the race after Saturday.”

Andersson has twice finished in the top three of the Tour de Ski, but the Swede has yet to win the overall classification.

This year the Tour includes four more stages: Wednesday-Thursday in Davos, free technique sprint and 20 km pursuit in classic technique, and in Val di Fiemme 15 km classic technique with joint start and 10 km free technique. race with final climb.
