EDGAR KAROFELD ⟩ on the Estonian peat industry and the restoration of residual peatlands without dark glass

In October, Eesti Päevaleh published three articles on the Estonian peat industry, which at times remained one-sided. Peat producers are criticized as if they are only interested in extracting poorly decomposed peat and leaving well-decomposed peat behind.

It is important to understand here that this decision was made by buyers, not by manufacturers-sellers. In this way, slightly more decomposed peat is currently produced than well-decomposed peat, because the former, thanks to its special properties, is suitable as a substrate for growing plants. Well-rotted peat is suitable for cogeneration of heating and electricity, but due to the CO2 tax imposed on peat it is no longer competitive. However, well-rotted peat is now increasingly used in horticulture and landscaping and has great potential for the production of numerous chemicals and high surface area activated carbon.
