Eesti 200 is also looking to abandon its energy partner in Tallinn

Pärtel-Peeter Pere, elected today president of the Tallinn region of the Reform Party, said in Delphi: “If the Social Democrats decide to seize this historic opportunity, together we will overthrow the power of the Center Party which has lasted too long, so we will accept this invitation, we will discuss it and we will definitely find opportunities for collaboration.”

Today was also the Estonia 200 vision day. According to Joel Jesse, president of the Estonia 200 faction of the Tallinn City Council, 20 years of central party rule in the city have led to stagnation in the Estonian capital, omissions accumulate, The city is becoming car-ridden, and the city’s citizens receive poor governance services. According to him, the worst thing is that the transition to Estonian-language education is stalling in the capital.

Aleksei Jašin, member of the board of directors of Eesti 200 Tallinn, is also convinced that high-quality education in Estonian is only possible in Tallinn without the Center Party, which prevents it. “We hope that the Social Democrats will also open their eyes and see the historic opportunity to overthrow the Center Party from the city government and bring the long-awaited change in the management of Tallinn and transfer education to the Estonian language,” Jašin said.

However, Madle Lippus, elected leader of the Tallinn Socialists a week ago, said they would not break the coalition with the Center Party. Lippus said attempts have been made in the past to keep state and municipal policies separate and that this has been successful. “Now yes, this coalition works for us,” she added.

Not all socialites think this way. It would be possible to govern the city of Tallinn without the Center Party and EKRE, but only if Jüri Ratas left the Center Party, Social Democrat Raimond Kaljulaid, member of the Tallinn City Council and Riigikogu, told ERR.

“To make myself clear. Without Kiige and Hanimägi, the Center Party has only 34 deputies in the Tallinn Council. If Ratas were to go too, the result would be 33. EKRE will have 6. 33+6=39, so it’s possible leave both the Center Party and EKRE in opposition. You don’t need either of them to govern the city.”

There are a total of 79 seats in the Tallinn City Council, so at least 40 mandates are needed to get a majority of votes in favor.
