In relation to cyber attacks by Iranian hackers on the control systems of Estonian boilers and water companies, Ärigenius asked Elering how cyber-proof Estonian electricity systems are. During the presentation of Elering’s security of supply analysis, the need to seriously invest in cybersecurity was highlighted given Estonia’s complex geopolitical situation.

“Investments in cybersecurity are needed both to ensure security of supply and to implement changes to the European Union Cyber Security Network Regulation and the Estonian Cyber Security Law,” the report says. In 2021 and 2022, there were no energy losses due to cyber attacks in the Estonian transmission network.

Lack of awareness of cyber threats contributed to the late November cyberattacks, says Liis Eiser, communications project manager at Elering.
