Magical Discovery: Citizen Scientists Uncover Enchanting Exoplanet, Dubbed ‘Hermione Granger
Citizen scientists exploring data gathered by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) have identified a groundbreaking planet and named it Percival, inspired by the father of Albus Dumbledore, the Hogwarts headmaster in the Harry Potter series.
Formally known as TOI 4633 c, Percival is a remarkable discovery beyond its connection to the Dumbledores. This extrasolar planet, about three times the size of Earth, orbits TOI 4633 A, a star similar in size to the Sun, within a binary system located approximately 309 light-years away from Earth. Positioned in the habitable zone of its star, Percival enjoys moderate temperatures suitable for liquid water, earning it the nickname “Goldilocks zone.”
What sets Percival apart is not only its fortuitous location in the Goldilocks zone but also the rarity of planets forming in systems with multiple stars. Furthermore, Percival boasts the most elongated orbit among Neptune-like planets and possesses the second-longest orbit recorded in TESS data, with only five other planets having orbits exceeding 100 days since the spacecraft’s launch in 2018.
“This planet is extraordinary on multiple fronts,” stated Nora Eisner from the Center for Computational Astrophysics and principal investigator of Planet Hunters TESS. “Its unique orbit, positioning in the habitable zone, and orbit around a bright star make it truly remarkable.”
Exploring the Enigmatic Star System
Percival's detection resulted from its transit across the face of TOI 4633, causing a slight dimming of light that TESS could detect. The transit method is particularly effective for identifying planets in close proximity to their stars, as they are more likely to pass between Earth and their star, creating observable light-blocking events.
Despite Percival's distant orbit, taking 272 Earth days to complete, it remains a unique find in transit-method detections. Scientists suspect the presence of another planet, TOI 4633 b, with a much closer orbit of 34 Earth days, yet its transit has not been confirmed due to its alignment with TESS.
