Duplicity Unveiled

“You just actin’ like an activist, it’s make-believe,” rapped Drake. These words struck at the heart of Lamar’s public image as a pro-Black activist. The accusation carried weight as questions arose about whether Lamar’s activism was merely performative or genuinely heartfelt.

What once started as a small hip-hop party in the Oosterpark has grown into one of the largest hip-hop festivals in the Netherlands. This is the chronology of the Appelsap festival in Amsterdam in a nutshell. Now the founders are starting a new festival, Mad City, with the “new generation”. A good time to look back on nearly two decades of apple juice.

But soon the festival grew and thousands of visitors flocked to Oosterpark. “For years it was the biggest hip-hop festival in Amsterdam and perhaps in the whole of the Netherlands,” says hip-hop expert Rajko Disseldorp, who looks up to the Appelsap era. “One year you saw an unknown artist who suddenly became very big a few years later. Everyone who likes hip-hop finds it difficult.”

While there have been several highlights, such as the return of The Opposites in 2019 or Kendrick Lamar in 2011, Waka Flocka Flame’s performance is one of Rogier’s highlights. “He was one of the first rappers to bring a kind of punk energy to hip-hop. We had to stop the show early because he went into the audience, which was definitely not the inten
