Director Ergo Kuld has produced the films that have attracted the Estonian film distribution audience the most over the past year: “Suvitajad”, which was visited by 107,000 people, and “Vigased prudid”, which collected 92,000 views. Kuld said in the Vikerraadio program “Lõpp hea, skus hea” that new screenings are needed, but he is not yet willing to work on “Kavade”.
In Estonian film distribution, “Suvitajad” was second only to the global hit film “Barbie” in terms of viewers. “Estonian songs still have an easy life in Estonia. Estonians still prefer their own history, Estonian history and Estonian language. In any case, this is a great recognition,” commented Ergo Kuld.
According to Kulla it was difficult to bring “Suvitatai” to the present day and make it work in such a way that people would also like it, so that it was not a copy or an easy way out. “I try to approach it as a story that has never been done before and to do it in an honest and genuine way, without thinking about the results or what other people think,” he said, adding that remakes need to be made to bring the story more close to the young spectator and one to be valorised in some way in the cultural space.
According to Kulla, he chooses actors based on feeling, based on what he expects from them and what he has seen from them before. “The whole working process is consensual, the actor and I create this role together. The actor has the vision and I trust him,” she confirmed. “For Kaire, I didn’t tell her personally, but the feeling wasn’t 100% what I wanted it to be when we stepped on the court, but I trusted the process. I knew going on the court, if she had her suit on, grimm , if we are in the right environment, it changes and it has,” Kuld said.
When Sulev Nõmmik’s film version was rejected by critics in 1978, the same story happened with Kulla’s “Suvitajates”, which was not particularly liked by critics, but which nevertheless won the public’s favor and a sincere contemporary start. was to entertain and play a little bit with these contemporary themes,” Kuld said.
Kuld assesses the panorama of Estonian cinema and production as satisfactory. “This funding policy is not so-and-so, these are painful topics. But I think the situation would be much better if there was an opportunity to diversify gender selection. This is largely determined by funding,” he said.
Kuld made all of his films with private financing. “It provides a kind of framework for our thoughts. We have to start from the fact that the goal is to please as many people as possible and at the same time maintain stratification so that we too can be taken seriously.” However, according to Kulla, the gap between popular films and serious films is not closed, because there are simply no opportunities.
According to Kulla, private funding gives him some freedom. “I prefer the work process where I have an idea, I develop it and I would like to implement it as soon as possible,” he noted.
At the moment, Kulla has a film in development in collaboration with Apollo, with which it is also planned to follow the procedures of the Estonian Film Institute and the Foundation to obtain the maximum possible financing for the film, in order to realize the story how it could be done. According to Kulla, the film in development is a period drama set in 18th century Mulgimaa.
According to Ergo Kuld they won’t remake “Spring”, at least for the moment. “These beautiful and immortal stories should be re-presented. I honestly admit that this topic was on the table when I spoke with me, but at the moment I don’t see that I could be the one to do it. Maybe in the future,” Kuld revealed.
