Estonia’s partner country declared itself visa-free

Ruto said his government has developed a digital platform that will allow people to electronically apply for the travel permit needed to enter Kenya in the future. “No one anywhere in the world will ever again have to bear the heavy burden of applying for a visa to come to Kenya,” Ruto announced in his speech marking the 60th anniversary of Kenya’s independence.

Ruto has long supported visa-free travel to the African continent. At a conference in the Republic of Congo in October, he announced that visa requirements for African citizens will be abolished by the end of this year.

Easing entry into the country is important for Kenya, as tourism plays a vital role in the country’s economy, CNN writes. For foreign tourists, Kenya can offer both beach holidays on the Indian Ocean and safaris in natural parks. Kenya is also a popular destination for recreational runners.

“Kenya has a simple message for humanity: welcome home!,” Ruto added.

The Estonian state has also supported the digital revolution in Kenya. The E-government Academy has introduced Estonian IT solutions in the areas of cybersecurity, e-democracy and smart governance to Kenya. Several Estonian technology companies from different sectors (e-education, e-health, smart cities, enterprise software) also operate in Kenya.

In the years 2013–2023, Estonia supported Kenya with over 2.5 million euros as part of various development cooperation and humanitarian aid projects and initiatives.
