Ewert Sundja on the job of assistant policeman: it doesn’t require much and helps a lot | Music

Ewert and the Two Dragons, semi-finalists of the Estonian Song, visited the “Hommik Anuga” studio. Last year the band’s soloist, Ewert Sundja, also joined as an assistant policeman. According to Sundja, he wanted to find a way to contribute to a safer environment and environment, the fruits of which he enjoys daily.

Ewert Sundja will participate in next week’s semi-final with two songs. Namely, he also sings in Cartoon’s contest song “Oblivion”. “I have 100% more chance of winning this way. I calculated it,” Sundja laughed and added that it was actually a total coincidence. Sundja’s bandmate Erki Pärnoja was surprised by Sundja’s participation in two songs. “I remember that we found out about our participation as a band while we were going to a concert in Finland. In the morning, in the port with sleepy heads, cameras and people appeared from somewhere. When the microphone was already in front of us, we still didn’t understood exactly what it was about. When we managed to calmly recover from this shock on the air, they asked us if we also knew that Ewert had put two irons in the fire”, recalls Pärnoja, who also asked Sundja for explanations.

“With this I have Joosep (with Järvesaari, and) together for a birthday in the summer, and since nothing too active was happening, I suggested they write something. Then we got together and had fun, and just like that, in one writing session, the story was almost finished. Then he was left to live his own life for a while and there was no active activity with him. We kept doing it and at one point it was October when Cartoon asked me what I thought about sending it to Eesti Laulu. I thought, of course. The song is beautiful and I won’t give up,” Sundja explained.

According to Dragons drummer Kristjan Kallas, their song is a few grams better. Cartoon, who last year received the gold record as the first Estonian song with the song “On and on”, the dragons are not afraid, because their song “Good Man Down” also has over three million views on Youtube. “These are historic millions. It was a time when everyone didn’t have computers at home and phones. You still went to mom and dad’s work to watch YouTube,” Sundja said.

The story of the dragon competition was not created for the purpose of Estonian Song, but is simply their story. Sundja wants to let the content of the song be interpreted by the listener. “When I write the lyrics, I don’t see it as a single option. These words can mean many things. If I say that the content of the song is everyone hugging each other, then it becomes a little silly. It’s an important journey even for the listener himself, so that he takes the part that speaks to him and interprets this text or melody for himself as he wants or needs at that moment. This is the best way of a song, “thought Sundja.

If Ewert and the Two Dragons was once the main place of work for musicians, this is no longer the case, according to Erki Pärnoja. Drummer Kristjan Kallas’ job is still making music, but he also has another band, Miljardit, and several projects with Erki Pärnoja. “They still invite me. To record, to play, I teach a lot,” Kallas said. According to him, bassist Ivo Etti is the most out of the group and is working. Etti works as a programmer in the banking field, which came as a surprise to Erki Pärnoja.

Erki Pärnoja mainly deals with music in many different projects. Ewert Sundja also has no job. “I go out and write,” Sundja said, but he also joined the auxiliary police force last year. While we were helping at Tallinn airport, an interesting thing happened, where information came that a person was arriving without a document. “We had to inspect the whole plane and instead two pieces arrived without documents,” Sundja said. He didn’t personally discover the criminals, but he was there. “That ‘assistance’ is still there for a reason. I am a support force,” explained Sundja, who is otherwise an assistant police constable in the criminal police. “I haven’t reached those milestones yet, but I might have to go at some point,” Sundja admitted.

The role of an auxiliary policeman is entirely voluntary, although Sundja said it would be nice to go and help at least six days a year. “Then the entire investment made by them is also profitable in some way. But no one demands anything. These offers, who to turn to for help or simply to be an extra hand, arrive almost every day”, explains Sundja. The musician was motivated to become an assistant police officer by a Facebook post. “I thought, why not? I could do it. I came this morning, I had an 11-hour shift. I got home at eight in the morning. I’ve been on patrol for 11 hours. But I’m not allowed to talk. Everything is so secret in the criminal police”, explained Il coercitivo.

“For me, it’s just that I thought, what can I do. I like having a safe environment and a home environment. It’s a relatively small contribution. Minimum input, maximum output solution. It doesn’t require much and contributes very positively to the overall context”, explained Sundja. Bandmate Pärnoja himself is in no hurry to become a police assistant, in fact he can’t wait to listen to Sundja’s songs, but the idea I like it alot.
