Fat Margareeta has been awarded the international eco-label Green Key | museums

The Estonian Maritime Museum’s Paksu Margareeta Visitor Center has been awarded the Green Key international eco-label, which recognizes the museum’s sustainable operating model and contribution to sustainable tourism management and environmental awareness.

Green Key is a voluntary international eco-label for tourism companies, which around 4,000 companies from 60 countries around the world have signed up to. The Green Key label lets visitors know that the institution bearing it is committed to reducing its environmental impact.

According to Urmas Dresen, member of the Maritime Museum’s board of directors, the Green Key label is, on the one hand, a recognition of the work carried out, but on the other hand it provides support to take further measures to further reduce the museum’s environmental impact.

“At the Paksu Margareeta complex, we have introduced several measures to become environmentally friendly. For example, intelligent automation solutions have contributed to energy efficiency and instead of environmentally harmful cleaning chemicals, we use activated water to disinfect the surfaces,” Dresen emphasized.

“We will continue vigorously on this path, raising awareness among ourselves and visitors and looking for increasingly intelligent solutions that adapt to the medieval cannon tower,” promised Dresen.

The Paksus Margareta Maritime Museum was completely renovated in 2019. The museum offers an overview of the maritime history here, along with a mid-14th century shipwreck found in Tallinn.
